Two Short Rides or One Long Ride: Which is Better For Training?

        Trainer vs Outdoor Ride

When comparing indoor trainer rides to outdoor cycling, a trainer ride generally offers a greater benefit for time efficiency, meaning you can achieve a more focused and intense workout in a shorter period compared to riding outside, as you eliminate factors like stopping at traffic lights and coasting on flat terrain, allowing for more controlled power output and less wasted time; however, outdoor riding provides benefits like varied terrain and a more natural riding experience.

But, I get so bored on the trainer I just drift off. If I'm watching some videos, it helps . . . until I get real involved. Still, I don't have to find as much gear to get ready!

I limit my sessions to 20 minutes at a time. But some days will do as many as three sessions maybe with one HIIT thrown in. I also have a folder of online cycling videos so that the onscreen venues change often.

        Tylenol Post Exercise, AI Overview

Yes, you can use Tylenol (acetaminophen) after weight lifting to help relieve muscle soreness, as it can temporarily alleviate pain without significantly hindering the muscle repair process, unlike some anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen which might interfere with muscle healing.

I heard/read/saw some years ago, that it was best to take no pain relievers at all . Tylenol works differently, so this makes sense.

Cycling Notes: Shimano 11 speed cassette on an 8 speed freewheel

An 11-speed sprocket can fit on an 8-speed freewheel if the cassette is a Shimano 11-speed 11-34T “road” cassette. These cassettes are rebadged mountain bike cassettes, so they can fit on older 8-10-speed freehubs.

However, you'll need to use a 1.85mm spacer to fit the Shimano 11-speed 11-34 "road cassette" on an 11-speed Road HG freehub.

SRAM's 11-36T 11-speed cassettes are not rebadged mountain bike cassettes, so they require an HG-11 freehub body.

Most 11-speed Shimano road and gravel cassettes require an HG36.8mm freehub body.[/INDENT]

Back in the day when I was racing, I had 3 pairs of extra wheels built with Camy rims, DT Swiss spokes, Shimano hubs, and 8 speed freewheels. These are narrow enough at 13 mm to use 28 mm tires on my TREK 970 and still have adequate frame clearance (clearance should be > or = to 3 mm). There is a significant increase in ride comfort with the 28 mm on 13 mm rims versus 25 mm tires on 19.5 mm rims even though mounted and inflated tire width is approximately the same for both at ~27 mm.
The original group set on the 970 was Shimano 600 (Ultegra), with an 8 speed cassette. It was replaced last spring with a Shimano-105-11-speed-group set and wider wheels (Bontrager - 19.5 mm rims). These are limited to 25 mm tires in order to have proper frame clearance on the 970.
WARNING: Check compatibility of tire and rim widths to prevent tire-roll off in hard turns.

This winter, I'm going to see if I can squeeze in some 28's on my Merckx.

Cycling Notes: Zone 2 or Fat Burning Training

Zone 2 or fat burning exercise not only burns fat but increases mitochondrial numbers and strength. However, you may want to vary your training so you are doing a mixture of training types for the best overall results.

Note that the increase of mitochondrial function occurs throughout the body including your brain cells. (So take that "Dementia"!)

2025 Resolution (in part because of you Bears): Incorporate meaningful anerobic work into my training routines!

          Yuck! There I said it.

Just 3 mm tire/chain stays clearances. And no rear derailleur trimming needed.

(Successful switch of the 105, 11-speed cassette from the Bontrager 19.5 mm wheel to the 13 mm Campy wheel.)

An added benefit. The Bontrager 19.5 mm IW wheels currently have 25 mm tires as these were the largest that would fit on the Trek 970. There is now enough clearance on the San Rensho to switch these up to 28 mm tires.

Another Florida scene. Canaveral National Seashore, Apollo Beach section. I ride the length of this beach road when we are down there. About 4 years ago there was a whole family of older and younger adults, about 10 feet before the sign, huddled against the front of their car that was parked on the side of the road. They were all completely nude. The car hid their lower front parts.. They had apparently stopped for pictures. Approaching from a distance, I assumed the women had on swim suit tops. However getting closer, it was clear that all of them were totally naked with the women having tan marks.
