I thought I would share some photos from our trip to Assen MotoGP this year. The visit to Assen was part of a bigger trip to explore a bit of Europe, go to Assen and then Sachsenring MotoGP and then to visit my parents homeland of Croatia and meet some long lost family.
It was myself and my wife Tanya (see Barry Sheene t-shirt), and my great mate Nick (man who has many photos with racing royalty) and his wife Christine.
The trip started with us flying into Frankfurt, Germany and picking up two motorhomes (RV's I think you guys would call them) and spending 4 days travelling through Germany, across Luxemburg, in to Belgium and then up to Amsterdam for a few days and then to Assen for the GP.
We then left Assen on the Monday morning after the race and meandered across into the old East Germany and to Sachsenring for the races there.
Then it was a few more days exploring down into Nuremburg and back to Frankfurt where we dropped off the RVs and flew into Zagreb, Croatia where we were picked up by my cousin and treated to two amazing weeks.
For Assen, we were lucky enough to be able to buy paddock passes via Joel Kelso and one of his sponsors who I had met at a bike gathering a few months earlier. It was a really serendipitous thing, and the paddock passes just elevated the whole MotoGP event to another level. We were invited into the BOE Motorsports (Joel Kelso's team) hospitality suite where they had fridges full of beer, cold water as well as lots of snacks. So each night after the racing we just hung around there, meeting whoever we met, drinking the beer before walking back the 5kms to our camping ground.
At one point on the Saturday night, probably around 8pm or so, we were walking around the paddock and my wife had walked on ahead of us a bit and I couldn't see her in amongst all the trucks etc. And that was when we saw Fabio Quatararo hanging out near his mobile home. So we went over and he was gracious enough to have a chat with us and take a few photos. But Tanya who is a big fan of his was missing out and i said to him "Mate, my wife is a big fan of you. She really likes your chest. Could you wait two minutes while i find her and bring her to see you?" and he said yes. So I ran off and finally found her and said "don't ask questions, just run"
Bless her heart, she just ran as best as she could considering her physical attributes, and we got back to Fabio who waited as he said he would, and she got to meet him and get some photos. You can see the way she looks at him in one of the photos that she's pretty happy
