    Colorado Trip Pictures

I posted some of theses pics in the Colorado thread but thought I'd repost them in one spot.
Trip was 12 days and a little over 3,100 miles. Shortest distance to Gunnison is 800 miles. Took us five days Most days for the trip were 300 miles or less.
We took almost all two lane roads to keep things interesting.

Next day we headed to Walden Co. taking 210 in Wy and 287 down to Co. 14 Pouder River.
Since it was Saturday the first part of the canyon road was busy with kayaker, rafters, fly fishers and hikers.

It was too hot to go see the Petroglyphs so we saved that for the next morning.
That night we had our cheapest and nicest room for the trip. $69

Back to the park in the AM.
Got to the park when they opened at 9 to beat the heat. Stayed too long and that plan didn't work out the best.

139 in western Co. was a nice road but boy is it hot out there with no good place to get out of the heat.
Instead of going to Gunnison we came very close to getting a room in Delta. After sitting in air conditioning at a Loma gas station for 30 minutes or so and stopping again for ice cream in Delta we felt good enough to continue on to Gunnison.

Gunnison and Crested Butt had spots block off on the wide street for a place to eat and drink if the restaurant were full.

The plan was to go to Naturita a night, then Del Norte a night after Gunnison but it was too hot over by Gateway so we spent a extra night at Gunnison.
        Almost didn't get a room.
We left Saturday and headed for Trinidad. On the way we decided to make a stop at Great Sand Dunes NP. Last time there for us was 1981.

Looks like you had a great road trip! The heat can be brutal but it can make for good memories and laughs, 15 or 20 years later!

Thanks for the pics and story, Lee. I was interested in the Dinosaur Park. You showed me some of your photos at the hotel, but they are really clear on a desktop monitor. Interesting stuff - I especially like the petroglyphs.

It was hard to get a picture showing the wall of bones. There's a bunch of exposed bones.
Bones from above the wall and to each side were removed and placed in different museums around the country.
When were there in the early 80s they were still exposing bones in the section they decided to keep in place.

I'm glad we decided to go back the next morning so we would have more time in the petroglyph area. We stayed too long that morning but it was worth it.
We met a old guy from Arizona who was a serious photographer and was very knowledgeable on petroglyphs.
We visited with him a long time because he knew so much about the history.

And Lee, by the way, thanks for the pictures of the sand dunes. I had no idea they were so BIG and extensive. Where in the world are all those people walking to? Doesn't one stretch of sand pretty much look like another? Or are there little defiles and features here and there among the dunes that can't be seen from afar?

The dunes are huge and you can see them from 20 or 30 miles to the west when riding through the flat potato fields.
The people are climbing to the top so they can surf down on what looks like snowboards.
Some spots are too steep and you would see people slide or tumble as they try to climb.
We didn't climb any of the tall dunes
