    gas leak

I noticed the smell of gas around the bike as I was gassing up today. Then saw the gauge start dropping in the first few miles. Got home and took off left side faring and saw gas leaking (signigicantly) from up somewhere underneath the gas tank. Anyone had this or heard about this happening on a k1300?

I’ll assume gas line, fuel pump, quick disconnects or ruptured tank....there ya go John ....good luck.

Yes, it is on the front of the tank. Either a plastic quick connect has cracked and you need to go to beemer bone yard for metal parts. or the output flange of the "fuel pump" has cracked where the fitting screws in and this is a OEM warranty fix. Screwing in a tapered pipe fitting thread to a plastic flange is trouble. Oh so easy to go too far. And even then over the years the pressure cracks the flange and you leak. I put a crimp hose clamp on it to keep it from cracking. The OEM fix is just about the same. The dealer will size up you situation and either put a clip on it or replace it with the up graded unit. Do not let them give you sheet and blow you off. It is their problem and there was a factory free fix.

Thanks fellas. I've now seen some recalls on this and it looks like a free fix. I was going to take all the tupperware off and have a look. But it seems like this is a "leave it to the professionals" kinda job. Especially if it's a factory fix.

I'd lay money it's the plastic quick disconnect. You can get another plastic one from BMW or get a metal one from Beemer Boneyard if you aren't in a hurry. Doing it yourself will save lots of $$!

Make sure that if the workshop checks it out that the flange is checked under fuel pressure. Mine had small cracks that could not be easily seen but opened up under fuel pump pressure. Took the shop 2 weeks to find that out.

Whoops. Should have read ‘not easily seen’ - fixed now

If it's a plastic disconnect that's cracked I wouldn't replace it with another oem that's the same and has been on a shelf for years. I'd get the metal ones.

At the same time, get hold of these fuel clamps instead of the single use oem type. They're a pita.
