You're the only guy I know who paid his doctor with a wrecked KLR

Considered one but it was too tall for me.

I put a lot of pretty serious adventuring miles on a late model gen 2 KLR: the full TAT, the SEAT, too many trips into Appalachia to count. This new bike fixes pretty much everything I thought sucked on the that bike. I don't think there's a better value motorcycle that will take you around the world reliably, go all day at 85 mph, climb over baby heads at high elevations, ford water up over the wheels, and carry my load along in doing it. There are loads better bikes out there but they all cost a lot more. Hell, for the price of a KTM 690R you could buy a KLR and pay for all your expenses on the TAT including shipping it back home when you're done. Kind draws what this bike is into sharp contrast for many adventurers on a budget.

I think they're going to sell a crap ton of these even with all the success the T700 is having.

The first gen KLR was better looking. The second was awful. But I agree, this thing is quite reliable and cheap.
I was reading up on the Yamaha XT600 or XT660. It seems that many folks in Europe, take that bike when the want to cross Asia. Not a BMW. They leave that at home.
I'm sure many people will dismiss those bikes, but you cannot beat that reliability at those prices. It's incredible.
I myself have a DRZ400, and only when I got that bike, I started to understand all the fuzz about DR650, KLR and the XTs. For what they are, they're pretty amazing.

Circa 1986, Tate City, GA. There's a 1984 KLR650 under there somewhere. ATGATT
