New farkle, space hack....

saw someone else do this and I copied.....used a roto molded small gun case (Pelican or whatever), mounted it to the license plate bracket and then mounted the plate to it. I can fit a Dynaplug tire compressor and a plug kit in there as well as a few other small items. The door serves as a shelf when it's open. It's waterproof and this particular box has locks that you have to slide back to lock and unlock so it can't come unlocked on it's own. There's also a spot to put a padlock if you so choose.
Since it sticks out further than the tail light, I had to mount a small LED light (amazon, like $6.99) that is powered by the rear light.

Pelican makes these boxes in a bunch of colors and sizes. I have a couple of "rescue me" orange boxes that were once used as paramedic kits.

Harbor Freight has some decent ones called Apache.

I'm sure if you scuffed it, paint would adhere but as the guys above noted, you can buy them in different colors and they are cheap enough.
