Is cam chain stretch covered by warranty (extended at the moment). Also there are two cam chain tensioners for after 12,000 miles, a black one and a silver one. Not too long ago there was only one. What is the difference. S1000RR 2017.

The silver one is the one recommended for use after 15,000 kilometers. The black one is stock. For BMW parts the silver piston is a bargain at 46$! Will give it a try as the bike is under extended warranty and Don't want to jeopardize that with non approved engine parts. Have been reading people try the silver one and had good results. Yes, the basic engines are fairly similar between the model groups. It is a 15 minute job also. Makes it a no brainer.Last edited by beech; 07-31-2019, 04:50 PM.

When I went in for the 18k checkup for the XR the service shop said they heard some usual noise and ended up replacing the top portion of the engine along with the cam tensioner. They did this under warranty as it was over $5K in repairs. The cam chain was barking at startup so knew it needed to be replaced or adjusted. This was at Eurocycle of Tampa Bay. The whole process seemed odd but didn't cost me but standard 18k maintenance.

Would be interesting to see the old chain. Saw a photo of one on the RR forum and it was kinked like crazy. For all the work this item has to do it is not all that strong. One needs to keep in mind this engine was designed as a track bike power plant and thus life of components vs out put is in balance. Take a look at the new R1250 engine silent chain now used to drive the cam shafts. Much lower RPM range though.

My BMW guru is Chris Johns of Escondido BMW motorcycles. CJ is a very accomplished rider, mechanic, and innovator who has a side business, Southern California Motowerks. He has developed and manufactured a brilliant mechanical cam chain tensioner for most BMW engines... http://www.southerncaliforniamotowerks.com/
I've had them do quite a bit of work on my bikes, recently including a complete ESA suspension rebuild on my new-to-me 2015 K1300S... it is simply fantastic now... I highly recommend them!!

Anybody know if this guy is still in business, his site is still up. I ordered his tensioner for my K1300s 1/12/20 but haven't heard a thing, no order acknowledgement or shipment.Originally posted by Kneedragger View PostMy BMW guru is Chris Johns of Escondido BMW motorcycles. I have a 2016 S1000XR. Replaced my original black cam chain tensioner with the silver one on 9/19/2020 at 42,170 miles. Couldn't tell any difference, but glad I did it. The bike is still running great at approx. 49K. I highly recommend the S1000XR. It's almost as fast as my K1300S, but with ergs like my R1200GS with a Sargent seat. Looking forward to an upcoming ride to the Chief Joseph Rally in John Day, Oregon.
