Need subscription to turn on your heated seat?

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...ions-will-pass

In the automobiles that BMW makes, they plan to include hardware in their vehicles that the owners will be required to pay for a subscription to use it. Like heated seats....

What's your thoughts on how you'd feel about having to pay a subscription service for your heated seats, grips or maybe something like the advanced riding modes?

Is it just a matter of time before this is in our 2-wheeled world?

Hope they drive away all their customers. Seems like an asshole move to me.

About once a year I go through my credit card statements looking for all the subscription based things I find there. I usually find a number of things I signed up for but just don't see the value months after signing up so I clean them out cancelling the ones I don't want. Going to a subscription based model has been happening in software for a few decades now and it's created a lot of new revenue for those products. Because we're basically all sheeple these days, I'm surprised it's taken car companies as long as it has to dive more deeply in to this model. I'm kinda surprised that something like heated seats is one of the things mentioned. Can I suspend it in the warm months and only turn it on when it's going to be cold? Seems like things like GPS/Nav, concierge access for assistance, weather and traffic access are the logical options and most of those are already subscription based.

It just seems like it creates more hassle for me to manage all those services making me wonder just how my life is improved by them?

It's not the end of the world. Subscription services make it cheaper to manufacture the vehicle (fewer options for them to manage). The down side depends on how much the option would have costs the old fashioned way vs how much it cost via subscription over the life of the vehicle. Most vehicles ....... aw, screw it, I don't like the idea either.

That is a very sweet ride. It won't happen quickly but I think we will be someday in the sunset years for vehicles like that. I know you're enjoying the hell out of it.

We bought the X5 M50i, It's got the detuned M engine that only makes 526 HP and 575 ft. lbs. It's a beast and I just couldn't justify an extra $20K to go full X5M. We just returned from a long road trip in it and damn, I'm happy we sprung for the M50i.

Every once and a while I cancel all subscriptions and wait to see if I miss any of them.

next subscription will be windshield wipers. The wipers will be on the car, but they will only work if you pay. so much bullshit. headlights, brakes, ABS...

And now, the rest of the story.....

Just read where the BMW heated seat subscription is for 1 series cars that do not offer heated seats as standard equipment. All other BMW series have heated seats.
Much to-do over nothing again on the internet.

Yeah, but don't think for a second that we're not being trained to accept that kind of delivery model. I'm not at all worried about it. Change is inevitable and I just hope I'm around long enough to see it

I feel the opposite way Wes. While Change is the only constant I'm thinking I'll be gone before that delivery model takes hold.
