    Hand Signals

We were on Deals Gap and 28 this week.

The riding quality on the Dragon was so bad it was scary.

A very small percentage of good riders but most appeared to have no clue.

So many oncoming bikes went by us extending into our lane that the number is difficult to recall.

Not so bad with right handers.

But on left handers there's enough overlap to redecorate a cage grill.

The closest call involved 3 GSs (warning, BMW content) on 28 coming back from Fontana Lake.

Very twisty section of road with no pull offs.

First bike successfully passes on a blind curve but could have been taken out by oncoming traffic.

He's up ahead approaching a left hand blind turn and sticks his arm straight out to indicate a car is coming around the curve.

The second rider takes this as an all clear signal and starts to pass.

We move towards the shoulder as it's clear if we don't the 2nd rider will be taken out in a head on.

So he's right next to us, sharing our lane at 50 mph, as the oncoming car passes.

    It was that damn close.

Also had a very large group of HDs doing the Dragon.

Three stragglers end up behind us on a section with no pull outs.

One rider angry shouts for us to pull off!

We finally get to one and pull off.

Two minutes later, the road is blocked by a large number of HDs.

One of the riders had gone off, into a ditch on the right side in a right hand curve.

    Ran wide.

Older gent with the air knocked out of him and maybe some broken ribs.

    Able to ride away!

Maybe that other HD rider shouted at him to pull off???

Hope the guy went to the hospital, internal bleeding is possible.
I've been right at the Dragon three times and never bothered to ride it.
    Too many idiots !
Three GSs huh, anyone we know?

      Don't know on both.

As far as riding the Dragon, apparently very early in the morning is safer. Not much there at 7-8 am.

Might want to ride early even then.

Last week it was crowded by mid morning.

Louis uses hand signals a lot.
I’d rather think someone’s a son of a bitch than to have him think I’m a son of a bitch.

There are two times that I usually run the dragon on purpose. Sunday morning at 7 am and mid-week after 5 pm during the summer months when the light is still up. You see about the same amount of traffic at these times which is minimal.

As far as hand signals go, I hate them and usually ignore them. One persons "stop" is another riders "go". I use a raised fist to signal stops, not everyone does this and can lead to confusion so I stopped using hand signals altogether. It is always on the rider to make safe passing decisions (or unsafe!). Comms are the best way to let another rider know what is in front of them.

I'm with you on this one, mon frer.. Other than warning oncoming riders that the popo is set up ahead.. I never EVER give hand signals to other riders for fear that they'll misinterpret. My favorite riding partner, DYL, almost always gives hand signals that all is clear when he's ahead of me and we're in "passing" mode.. but I'll not return the favor. I simply don't want the responsibility of anyone elses safety when small margins can mean the difference of a good day.. and a really bad one...

I shook my fist at a little red car once. It probably cost me a half second max. Problem was, I didn't know it but I didn't have a half second to spare. Silly me, hands are for bars.
