    Your opinion: Tire Question

    I thought I'd see what your opinion is on this issue: My KRS has Pilot Road tires on it, probably still have 70% tread life. I put the tires on when I went to my last THCR in 2012. The bike has been stored under cover in my garage and only ridden maybe 500 miles since then. I'm thinking about putting 600 or 700 miles on it on twisty roads at a spirited pace. Would you trust tires that were that old for a few days of hi-speed, twisty travel?

    Being stored out of the sunlight they may be ok, but I would feel better with a new set.

        Okay, MattB, this is when you jump in and make a really lowball offer to buy those tires.

        With a bit more time and the ability to write easier (I was on my phone earlier), let me expound a little. You said "spirited pace". This means to me that you are pushing the bike and tires and I wouldn't trust old tires when I was pushing. If you just wanted to put miles on, say a highway trip or even two lanes without tearing it up, I might depending on whether the tires look dry rotted or not. You could also take the tires off and inspect them for flexibility or damage. That would mean quite a bit as well.

            Joe, it's just with that Arkansas crowd. Is that too spirited? I appreciate everyone's opinion. I guess I'd be worried about it too much during the ride anyway. I'll just ride my old GS. It's still got enough tread to get me through a couple of days.

              Well, it's not the crowd that is controlling your throttle and brakes. You are the one to decide that. But yeah, riding with those hooligans I would have a hard time keeping a sedate pace.

              Guys, if you do some scientific research into it, most manufactures will say the side wall may, just may show hairline trabecular cracks which most think dry rot. This is not true like in Jeffs case, if it is stored inside. They have synthetic rubber on the outside of the sidewall, covering the real carcass, which does this, and has no effect on the carcass itself. Dont believe me.

              Jeff, ultimately you need to do what you need to do to make YOU comfortable... but let me tell you a long story made short(er).

              There was a Doooood, cheap sucker, not much different than TheDude or the K1Dude. Doooood went in on a group buy in fall 2012 and bought a bunch of race tires. Dooood wasn't overly thrilled when they arrived and they were date coded 2010 manufacturing date. Due to various reasons, Dooooood wasn't able to get out to the track as often as he desired during 2013, 2014 and 2015. Doooood has been running said tires in the "Advanced Intermediate" and "Advanced/Race" groups at trackdays the past few years on a bike without the electonic nannies/ass-savers. The last tire was just disposed of in June of this year at 9 years old after 6 days of proper thrashing.

              Like I said, YOU need to be comfortable in YOUR choice, but it's unlikely (even with the hooligans at AHR) that you will press your Pilot Roads harder on the street then the Dooooood was on the track.

              BUT, the safe answer is to throw them away.... can you please let me know when you put them out, I'll wait by the dumpster.

                Thanks, Matt. I guess.? Fuck it, I may ride the beast. Besides, billmotganjr will be there, so I know I will have help if I need it. Maybe I'll bring some new tires with me. I'm sure McFly wouldn't mind hanging around and changing them out for me, while I'm out on the dirt bike.?
