    Chain Final Drive...

My third moto was a VFR 750 back in the mid nineties.

A friend bought the same bike model at the same time.

I lubed my chain at least every 500 miles, even when touring.

He never did anything to his chain, although it may have been lubed during any dealership services.

Both bike chains started to kink at about 15k miles.

After another 15k I replaced my chain again. Don't recall what happened with my friends bike at that mileage.

Almost immediately after the chain replacement, I traded mine in on a '98 K12RS in 1997.

Did a total of about 30k on the VFR.

    Wish I still had her.

A Riding Bud has a VFR750 Red color. A sweet ride I must say and overall excellent Sport Touring Bike. He has newer and more capable bikes but he keeps his VFR going and won't part with it.

      I miss every bike I've sold/traded in.

"I miss every bike I've sold/traded in." I bet most of us feel that way.

Modern top end chains have almost no maintenance required. I was reluctant to get one, but since the XR came, I am a convert. I hit it with a spray down of Dupont chain lube if and when I remember. Same with my husky.

The chain on my Triumph has about 20K miles on it. I inspect it and lube it regularly, expecting to see some evidence of wear. Not yet.

On the other hand, my '70 CB-750 SOHC has twice sent broken chains through the lower cases. That sucks.

Chains and sprockets are disposable like tires and less expensive. It's not something that I obsess over getting the maximum life out but when I've ridden in particularly nasty conditions, I'll clean and oil it and keep it looking good. I'm not sure that does anything to extend its life. O and X ring chains are pretty maintenance free. My recent chain drive bikes have been an S1000RR, KTM Super Duke, KLR 650, WR250R and my experience with those suggest that it's not a factor in selecting a bike to purchase.

If my K1200RS would have had a chain I would have spent far less on maintenance and repair.

Oring chains have been a game changer for bikes. But, a torn oring via dirt etc, is about the only thing that crosses my mind, well too bad for that chain then. I try to keep my S bike chain in a clean state and lube with Dupont 500m or so. Easy to do with a lift and it gives me the chance to look things over. Some guys take lube on trips.
