Bad Wreck on a BMW GS

WOW, just WOW... I don't know the specifics of the brake system on a 2015 GS, but this just adds to my paranoia of advancing to the electronic motorcycle generation.

FYI, many of you know this talented rider and videographer who goes by Mirage_ZA

Commenting on my own post after another look at this, he DID in fact shave off approximately 60 kph (36 mph) which was FAR better than I had originally thought/noticed.

Matt, why question the brakes when there is no data provided as to cause of the accident? Was it the staution? there was a recall on that but I don not know the dates. This is also posted on i-bmw but I haven't looked there for an update yet. My gripe is posting assumptions without facts.

Good and fair question Tim. Let me start by saying, that's why I rather quickly replied to myself. If you watch the video (and read the pilot's initial and subsequent thoughts over on i-bmw) he discusses brake failure as not allowing him to scrub more speed before subsequently crashing. My INITIAL comments were made after watching the video and VERY WRONGLY looking at the gear indicator thinking it was fifty something kilometers vs a 5 for the gear indicator.

Looking again at the actual gauges, it looks like his speed went from about 115 kph to 55 kph as noted in my second post. That's a reduction of about 36 mph. How much of that was engine braking related vs actual braking I do not know. It would be helpful to know over how many feet of travel the 36 mph speed reduction was completed. Regardless, simply based upon past videos showing riding history I'm very inclined to believe the seasoned pilot who claims that he had little to no braking power. YMMV

At the 1 minute 30 second mark the front tire slips out, THEN catches and induces the tank slapped.

Thank your lucky stars for a good helmet! Fantastic video coverage and a loyal GS that did not land on his partner.

It takes a small bit of application time for the ABS to be effective. Unfortunately for Mirage_ZA he did not benefit from the ABS system.

Wish him the best in is recovery.

                OMG !
Reminds me of my own crash with the GSA. I realize I was very lucky.
On 2015 bikes, spokes coming loose was not an issue, right?

No spoke issue on mine, rusty or otherwise. What an interesting/frightening thing to see that thing flying over him. Cudda been a lot worse...

That was terrible to watch. Could he perhaps have picked up something in the rear tyre when he went over onto the shoulder of the road that perhaps quickly deflated it?

According to the posts on ADV that I have read, it is an issue on late 17 and 18 MY bikes only. Chinesium?

Who dumped those rocks in the grass?! They looked bigger and bigger the closer he came in for the crash landing...
