One of the most misleading and reprehensible words used in discourse today is "narrative." There's no longer truth and lies but everyone gets to define their own narrative of the situation. It's a bullshit term that means you're about to be lied to and misled from the actual truth of what's going on - because they don't like the truth they have a narrative.

Bill, it seems that those that propagate these "narratives" do so because they believe in the core of their being that nothing is off the table with respect to getting Trump out of office. No sane, educated person would otherwise look at the objective truth of what is going on and spin an alternative narrative.

I've been saying for a few years now that the #1 thing causing the divide in the US is the 24 hour news cycle and cable news. The madder they make you the more money they make and they do that with feeding your confirmation bias. I just watched the Netflix special last night "the social dilemma." I already had some sense about how everyone on social media was being manipulated to keep your attention but this show was a real eye-opener on just how sophisticated the AI behind Facebook and others is cleverly harvesting your attention and monetizing it. They pretty much answered the question to why everyone on one side of the aisle can't understand how wrong and misguided people are on the other side. They demonstrate how you're being fed everything that feeds your confirmation bias and nothing that conflicts with it because that's how they keep your attention on their platform for longer. Balanced feed of news? Not even close and it's more like 100% what the AI has learned is your bias and feeds it.

It's only going to get smarter and more dangerous how these AI engines are manipulating the information available to you with the only goal being to increase profits for social media giants. The worst part about it is that the indoctrination starts as soon as you let your kid on social media.

This is the problem behind just about all our problems today. The future won't need terminator cyborgs to kill us. Social media AI will convince us to do it to each other in civil war.

I agree. The instant news blitz and short cycle has a high negative impact on society. Definitely helps push us apart. People have been manipulated since the first books were written but the degree to which it's happening now with AI is very frightening....and our parents were worried about the bad influence of TV! We have never used facebook and my daughter dropped it a couple years ago after she got sick of the negative aspects of it. Unfortunately, AI and social media are here to stay for most of the planet's population. Everyone just needs to remember that whatever your political bent we have much more in common than not.
