    Rode today, 1 month post-surgery

It was a relatively balmy 52 degrees and sunny today, so I decided to try out my new right knee on its maiden voyage. I've been doing the PT to get increased range of motion in the new joint. The day after surgery, I had 90 degrees of motion. Yesterday at PT it was about 110 degrees, so I figured I would try it out.

Before I did anything, I tested out the comfort level in the garage on the centerstands. First I tried the S1000XR. That was definitely too tight; I'll need more PT before riding that. Then I tried out the R1200GS. Mmmm, not bad, not bad at all. So that was the one I fired up. I got my gear on, took the bike off the centerstand and tried to back it out of the garage. The bike's ESA was set for Sport, two-up, which gives it more pre-load and raises the bike, which makes it harder to maneuver on a slick concrete floor with your feet. So I changed the ESA to one-up, which made it easier to turn around. So up my half-mile gravel driveway I went without mishap, and out on the open road. I figured out that changing the ESA setting also gave me less legroom than I'd had when it was set at two-up. But it wasn't so tight that I changed it back. I did about 10 miles on rural two lane. It felt pretty damn good, although maybe a little premature. More PT for me!
I’d rather think someone’s a son of a bitch than to have him think I’m a son of a bitch.

Healing well. Keep up the PT. Susan rode to Modus, CT in 1994 on our K75s just a short time after surgery. The doctor told her it would be OK to "take the BMW".

Rob, after 50+ years of pretty strenuous athletic adventures, injuries, surgeries, and recoveries, I have one simple piece of advice (which even Mani will agree with): "Just don't get cocky." Do your PT exactly as scheduled - no more, no less.

Tyson, I'm more inclined to adhere to the school of thought that says, "Whatever doesn't kill me makes me stronger." This is my third joint replacement, so that's worked for me in the past. However I am very careful not to have a spill. That would be a fuck up.

True. But, I say again: "Don't get cocky."

Good going Rob. Would expect nothing less from you. But do take it easy and get the PT done and over. You of all peeps know, its not entirely up to the rider whether and when he falls. That will set you off really bad.

Keep up the PT, every day !
It's bee thirteen months since my rotator cuff surgery and I do PT five days a week still.
Good luck Rob, but don't push it either.

The Dr told me that tendons and bones don't get good blood circulation
to heal. I made a heater to circulate warm water through a cuff over my
shoulder. I put that on every morning to 120 degrees to get blood flowing.
I don't know the PT protocol for a knee replacement, but I'd think that a
                little heat wouldn't hurt.

Mike, with that heater on, you really are bionic.

Heat dont no extra good. Its not circulation, its the stretching in and pliability.

Heat warmed it up so I could stretch and improved blood circulation.
The surgeon told me to apply heat.

Well, hopefully a time will come when the pandemic will be behind us and I can get you to splash through Reyes Creek one more time!

Glad to hear you're doing so well Rob. I have gone down a similar road. Two years ago I had two fusions done in my lower back. Had the next joint cleaned out and the fusion started 3 weeks ago today. It's a nice day with snow coming tonight so I'm getting ready to sneak outside for a short walk which is the prescribed therapy. Did all this early in January so I can hopefully be all back together by riding season!

Jim, that was the method in my madness too. Get it done in the winter so we can ride in the warm weather.
