    Google Chrome & Norton Antivirus Make for a Very Slow Windows 10 Restart...

    My HP Laptop with Windows 10 & Norton Antivirus has been taking more than an hour to several hours to reboot.

    Off loaded all files, reinstalled Windows 10 and still took forever.

    Finally went to the startup menu and removed Google Chrome.

    Now it restarts in minutes!!!

    And no problem starting up Chrome.

    I have no idea why.

    Maybe only a temporary fix.

    We'll see.

    It's both funny and sad that a computer in 2021 is slower than a IBM mini-mainframe running 2mb (yep, mb) of Ram was in the late 80's. Sure our laptops and desk and phones will do more today, but not necessarily any one thing quicker. BTW, the absolutely BEST operating system ever was OS2. Too bad Bill and IBM couldn't get along. Not sure who the bad guy was in that fight, but we are the one's that lost.

      OS2 was great until drivers quit working, then it was a beast and not a very fun system to work on. Getting it to talk to specialty printers was a chore as well. But once it was dialed in the system was fantastic. Oh, and the bellyaching that went on when NT desktop replaced OS2 was like watching toddlers throw a tantrum. Well, mostly the engineers...

    Has started taking forever to boot up after a shut down.

    Will uninstall Norton Premium and test.

    If still a problem, will do the same with the main Norton program.

    (Currently taking forever just to uninstall the former.)

      Still hanging on startup with Norton 360. Uninstalling today.

        All Norton uninstalled. No longer excessive hang time on start up.

        Will reinstall Norton 360 and re-test.

        After having used Chrome for several years, I began having the same problems. I don't know what has happened with Chrome, but lately my computer has been agonizingly slow, freezing, crashing, etc. So I removed Chrome and started using Microsoft Edge, problem solved... my computer now functions perfectly.

        PS... I use Malwarebytes, not Norton...

        I use AdBlock with Chrome. You would be surprised how much it blocks.

        Have now uninstalled HP Support Assistant App and reinstalled Norton 360. So far, good.

        It is not clear to me whether uninstalling the Support Assistant or uninstalling and reinstalling Norton solved the problem.

        Not sure I need the Support Assistant and it caused errors when loading pages.

            So after re-installation of Norton, back to extremely long hang time on start up.

            Deleted once again and now have almost immediate start up.

            Again, this is on an HP laptop with Windows 10.

              Contacted Norton and they remotely re-installed Norton Antivirus.

              The Tech remotely worked on the installation for over 2 hours.

              Everything working smoothly and quickly now.

              They also added 3 months to my subscription at no charge.

                I have no idea what the Tech did to fix it.

                But next time it gets slow I'll let them fix it and not waste my time.

              So the long hang time returned.

              AND.....

              All of my Microsoft WIndows Office documents went blank.

              Sorry Norton. I tried to make our relationship work but apparently you're just a useless POS for my computer.

                I was just forced this winter to upgrade one of my machines from Windows 7 (to me, the pinnacle of Windows), to Windows 10 in order to install freaking tax software. After upgrading, I bitched, cried, and bitched some more to Joe, personally as we talk pretty regularly. Joe was very helpful, he told me to quit whining.

                Anyway, none of that matters, but what I wanted to suggest to you is to disable "Fast Startup". It sounds counter intuitive, but I can assure you, that in my case, Windows 10 seems to run better and is more predictable. Hopefully you try it, and find the same results.

                If you'd like to see how your PC performs without fast startup enabled, you can disable it in just a few steps:
                1. Right-click the Start button.
                2. Click Search.
                3. Type Control Panel and hit Enter on your keyboard.
                4. Click Power Options.
                5. Click Choose what the power buttons do.
                6. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
                7. Click Turn on fast startup (recommended) so that the checkmark disappears.
                8. Click Save changes.

                If you want to re-enable fast startup at any point, simply repeat the steps so a checkmark.

                As I said, give it a try, hopefully it helps with your issues as well. I'm much happier now. My average startup time MIGHT be slightly slower (I'm talking a few seconds, maybe), but it is now consistent and stable.
