Just be sure to crash in clear weather. Those damned medivac helicopters are dangerous in IFR.

UK (Lexington, KY) has three Heli-ports. All were closed mid day, August 21st, 2010 due to rain and thunderstorms. Somerset Regional Hospital had a helicopter and their crew flew that day. You're motto should be "Just be sure to crash near a Class 1 trauma center, or near a medical helicopter team willing to take you there."

I always saw medjet as something for travelling overseas, like if you hit a goat in Peru, or something crazy like that. Is there a real benefit here in the states?

The Garmin Montana 700i or 750i seems interesting but I haven't decided on one yet. Both included built-in inReach SOS service (with subscription), topo maps and North America road maps.

If you are hospitalized 150 miles or more from home Medjetassist will get you back to your area hospital so you can recoup near family and friends. The USA is a big country.

PMS: It was Chile and it saved me many thousands of dollars.

Someone I know that lives in the Dallas TX area had this policy when he crashed his 1600GT somewhere in the wilds of California. What he passed along from the experience was that apparently MedJet and others like it have coverage maps much like cell phone companies. If you crash in an area where they don't have a jet standing by they're apparently under no obligation to get you to a home hospital. I haven't verified this myself but it might be worth looking in to. In his case, he felt like they were trying really hard not to fire up the jet to get him back to Dallas.

Reading their agreement I do not see this as being outside of reality. Although I am sure there are some caveats. In most cases, MedJet will arrange and pay for transport from a hospital to a facility capable of flying their aircraft (read affiliates aircraft because MedJet does not operate any aircraft themselves). Therefore, IF they can get ground transport and IF they can land a plane, they will get you.

I spent a few years working for a government agency that transported emergent patients to the hospital and a few things pop up. The local counties have the authority to restrict who can transport medical patients. If the local authority does not allow private transport, or you must travel through a jurisdiction that does not allow private transport, then you are indeed stuck. If the local authorities allow for private transport of a patient, then I do not see where MedJet could deny a member if they meet all other criteria (and there are quite a few restrictions). I'd suggest reading the agreement.

To be clear, Medjet does not pick you up from an accident. You have to get to the hospital on your own. Medjet only transports you from one hospital to another. If you are not able to ride your motorcycle home because of the accident they will transport it back to your home town. Medjet is NOT insurance.
