Clueless Aussies Driving Around Western USA

In the jokes forum on this site, there was one advertising "Too Much Information". It reminded me of when 3 families of Aussies (my wife and I were one of those) decided to travel to the USA for a Christmas / New Years adventure.

Part of the adventure was hiring 3 Cruise America RV's in Las Vegas, heading out to the Grand Canyon and then heading to San Francisco where we would drop them off and book into hotels.

Headed northwestish up to Beatty NV for a night and then drove west across Death Valley which was fuk'n awesome. Felt like we were driving into a painting.

We headed along Route 136 towards Lone Pine CA and stopped at the Eastern Sierra Visitor Centre (Inyo National Forest - Eastern Sierra Visitor Center (usda.gov)). Had a look around, checked out some maps and then talked to one of the staff there. We had worked talking to the staff that going north and trying to get across the Sierra's was maybe not a great idea. So we looked at the maps some more and decided to get to Bakersfield CA and stay the night.

The guy looked at us funny, and said something like "ok, but may i suggest you head a bit further north and stay somewhere like Visalia". We said, nah, that's a bit too far, we'll stay in Bakersfield. He shrugged his shoulders and we were on our way. We got a bit sidetracked on the way, and ended up seeing the airplane boneyard in Mojave which was cool.

Anyway, we get to Bakersfield and quickly realised why the information guy was suggesting we move further north. The first RV park we saw had two cop cars in the entry so we didn't stop there. We then pulled over to confer, and ended up outside a motel that looked like something out of Breaking Bad. Our girls were ready to kill us which would have spiked the murder rate by 10% for that afternoon.

So we moved on to Visalia and had a great night shooting cans with an air rifle that we had bought at Walmart.

Too Much Information is never enough

At least you were on the right side of the road, unlike one clueless American you may know! Good story though. Come see me and we'll hook you up with something bigger than an air rifle.

LOL! Yeah, there are some places that even I wouldn't stop and I fit right into some seedy spots. And then you have the Gordon, which was incredibly seedy yet one would meet the nicest people.

Doctor, during high school and college summers, I worked in the oilfields of California and Utah. Bakersfield is a big oil province. One night our old oilfield truck had trouble and we had to stay in this huge but seedy motel. They showed us how to find our room out back AND GAVE US A PADLOCK for the door! They thought nothing of it. It went on a hasp so we could lock ourselves in and away from the thugs that might be around. There was no doorknob or other locks. Even in 1969 or 1970 when this happened, this had to be illegal. (This was actually in Oildale, a lower class 'suburb' of Bakersfield, where 'oilfield trash' folks were a step up from the ordinary citizens.)

So, you probably were right to continue on north looking for lodging.
