        On October 7, 1780, near the area that is now known as Kings Mountain, NC, a group of Patriots, with assistance from the Overmountain Men, defeated Ferguson's Loyalist militia. One of those Patriots who gave his life that day was my 8th generation grandfather Preston Goforth. He was one of 4 brothers, those other 3 brothers being Loyalists. During that battle, according to witnesses and written accounts, my grandfather and one of his brothers, taking deliberate aim, shot and killed each other. My grandfather had left England years ago for a life of freedom in America. He died as an American defending that freedom.
        Let freedom ring!
