Ramps to load bike in pickup

    #2
Eric, I got a cheap-ass ramp from Harbor Freight for about $125.00. It's too short. It works barely, so long as I find a good hill to back up to and have some decent helpers. I don't recommend it. Joe, on the other hand has an easy load set-up that he does single-handedly. His solution is not cheap. I'm envious, until I see how much room it takes up in his truck.

How short is too short? I have seen a few at 7 feet long but am concerned at spacing between bars, what is the spacing between bars on yours and what length is it overall?

Eric, my ramp is only 6 feet long.. It's 30 inches wide when opened. It folds lengthwise to only 15 inches. It's handy, but only rated to about 500 pounds. My Triumph Sprint weighs 475, but when I am on the ramp pushing the bike, that adds another 190. There are no bars on my ramp. It's solid flat aluminum stock, so I don't have to worry about making a bad misstep. I have used it for the K1300S. It didn't collapse, but it seemed a bit sketchy.

You need to get Joe or Pete (for example) to give you some feed back and some pictures. Their set ups are slick.

Thanks much appreciated, might have to post naked pictures to get Joe an Pete to chip in.

Another consideration is how high your truck bed is. Lifted or 4x4 s would obviously be better with a longer ramp.

Eric, Loggie's point is one I forgot to make. My F-150 is a standard long-bed. It's a pretty good reach to the tailgate.

I have pictures of Joe and Randy's ramps from Terlingua but we're out of town until tomorrow.
Seems like Charley had a good ramp at the River Inn Texas one year.

And if you are good, you don't need any help.

To be fair, Joe could probably just lift it on

Thanks Wes, I would most likely walk it up the ramp as I do not trust myself to ride it up.

Riding it up is a bit like rooming with Joe at a rally. It's only terrifying the first time. After that it's just a bit unnerving. I mean, if you can ride a bike down the hill at the Wattstull......

I've ridden all of my bikes up the ramp. Easier. I have also roomed with Wes. He's very easy.

Sorry, I just found this thread.. I have the exact ramp that Joe has except it's 9' long. At 9' it folds in half so it fits inside my truck. I drive it up the ramp all the time. No it's not cheap.

HF has a folding ramp, in fact several, and have used them for years and still do. Strong enough and light weight. My trifold from HF may accommodate your sleds width.

2 x 12 gives me something to mount the chock onto and takes a little weight off the tailgate. These are nine footers so they fit inside the truck with the back seats folded up. With the straps going to the truck hitch the whole setup feels very rigid and I just drive up it. They can be separated if you need to be wider. Rated 1500 pounds each.

I have two folding ramps, one to walk on and one to roll the bike on. They store in the bed
                    of the truck nicely.
You can always find a mound or something to back up to and make the grade less steep. I
had to walk back 1/4 mile to get the bike once though.
Be sure to strap the ramps to the hitch so they don't slide out from in under you.
Oh, the sled in the back of your truck..... NOT a good thing, get a trailer !
