    Washington's Birthday

    Fellow riders:

Because we sometimes have reasonable discussions around a fire-pit regarding historical issues, I thought you might enjoy me waxing on about Washington's Birthday. I remind you that today, February 22nd, is (sorta) the Birthday of the Father of our Country.

He was born in Pope's Creek, Virginia on FEBRUARY 11th, 1731. But when England and the Colonies adopted the Gregorian Calendar in 1752 (It previously was the Julian Calendar), he lost 1 year and 11 days. George Washington's Birthday became Feb. 22, 1732!

And, the holiday we celebrated this past Monday, IS NOT PRESIDENTS' DAY. That is an invention of the media. The Federal Holiday is officially Washington's Birthday, or in some states, George Washington Day. His Farewell Address will be read in the U.S. Senate today. As historian and Washington's biographer James Thomas Flexner writes, Washington was truly "The Indispensable Man."

So, there's that. See some of you soon at THCR!

George Washington was: "First in war. First in peace. First in the hearts of his countrymen." (Who declared that?)
