Gino Mader is a rider I have watched since he first appeared as a rising young cyclist. In 2021, he got nipped controversially at the finish line in a stage of Paris - Nice. He had been on a long solo break and was only a few hundred yards from the line. It would have been his first major win but for Primoz Roglic the race leader (with lots of wins under his belt). For no real reason, Roglic burst from the pack two a hundred yards back, closed the gap and won took the win from Mader by a few feet. It was generally seen as sort of boorish. But, Roglic didn't owe Mader anything and everyone, especially young Mader, took it with grace. Mader went on and did well in a couple of Grand Tours and was a well respected domestic.

There are lots of articles about this incident. This one is pretty fair and not sensationalized. Of course without this incident, the legacy media would total ignore the Tour d' Suisse.

#3.1Editing a commentThanks, Wildbears. Bad luck that he was hurt so badly that he died. An American rider went off at the same place moments earlier and had a concussion and contusions - but not fatal. There was a slope that was steep, but didn't have trees or rocks and was fairly grassy. However, there was a drainage down below in which Mader landed. He was in the water when they got to him. Drowning will not be ruled out until the autopsy is released. -
Apparently Magnus Sheffield, the American, and Mader collided and that caused both to crash. Sheffield was discharged after three days from the hospital. They were reported to be going 50 mph. Mader was thrown off of his bike and down the ravine. Maybe he was trying to pass on the outside on the left hander and Sheffield went wide.Last edited by wildbears; 06-22-2023, 05:20 AM.

I had heard that they collided and I had heard that they did not..Looking at the skids in the gravel by the side of the road, it is likely that they DID collide. Your report is probably more recent than what I read.
In 2015 I went down the south descent from the Col d'Izoard in the French Hautes-Alpes. Three of us were leapfrogging one another by drafting at over 100 kph. It seemed safe enough at the time, but later at a bar in Guillestre I got to imagining what a blowout at the speed would be like. Would the tire come off the rim and jam itself into the forks, or would a simple death wobble occur and through you off the bike? We pondered all these thing and had another beer! (While waiting at least thirty minutes for our fourth companion who seemed scared of speed.)Comment

As a kid in junior high, I rode my 3 speed Raleigh English bike to school. We lived up hill from the school and there was a steep section of road on the way there (Compton Ridge Rd.). The speedometer would routinely hit 40-45 mph. -
In this part of Oklahoma, we don't have hills quite like that. 32-35 tucked in tight is about the max. BTW, I excel at riding downhill downwind! LOL
