I heard today the the Tour is the most watched sporting event in the world. About half of the world's population.

Vingegaard is very impressive in the mountains...
Especially given his "flat" personality.
Could he act less excited after a win?

He is like "personality free," at least in public. However, it is obvious that he and Tadje have respect for one another with no major animosity. At the starts, at the cool down tents, and during the stages, they treat one another as worthwhile rivals rather than vicious enemies. Not the stuff that Lance is made of. This is a silent way of speaking for Jonas.

Mike, did you catch the price of the Cervelo S5 in that video? $6900.00 (Canadian?) Whether Canadian or US, that's a nice piece of change FOR THE FRAME. I am sure that the forks and stem and bars must come with it, but that does NOT include the group set of derailier, brakes, crank and crank arm, pedals, chain AND Wheels and tires. The gruopo is about $3,000.00 alone. Crank arms and crank- $900.00? Wheels and tires - $2,000.00, although this st up might be more.
I haven't priced out top of the line bikes lately, so I may be low on these prices. But, near top-line bikes are $7500 easy, and a bike like this guy is showing in the video, is north of $10,000.00. Wildbears has lots of money, he probably knows more details than I.
BTW Cervelo is a Candian company. They were pioneers in aerodynamics. At one time 90% of the top time-trialists and triathlon competitors used one version or another of their TT bikes.

Mike, power to weight ratio is HUGE in the Tour de France for the simple reason that the race is designed to heavily favor cyclists who are outstanding climbers. Fast riders on the flats, rolling terrain, and in sprints, just cannot sustain the watts required to get their heavier bodies over the summits of these climbs.
Aerodynamics matter, but the frontal area of like riders will be similar regardless of their weight differential. Certainly, some guys are more aero than others (Vingegaard certainly being one), but for the most part the drag is similar. When the drag is similar, the advantage goes to the person who can put out the most watts for the longest sustained effort. But, the calculations change going uphill, where the lighter rider can go the same speed expending much less energy.
The "Spring Classics" and "The 5 Monuments" have sharp short climbs in which powerful riders can grind out a kilometer or two and then recover on the following downhill or flats. Typically, these 1-day races are won by bigger brawnier riders. It's notable that Podegar won TWO Monuments this year. (Milano-San Remo and Tour of Flanders)Last edited by 955i; 07-25-2023, 12:37 AM.

Relative sizes.....Vingegaard in the yellow jersey.
Note that there was a shot of Vingegaard next to his father and the cyclist was about a head taller than his dad.

That's over 460 watts for his weight.
"When an object's velocity is held constant at one meter per second against a constant opposing force of one newton, the rate at which work is done is one watt."
An example: A person having a mass of 100 kg who climbs a 3-meter-high ladder in 5 seconds is doing work at a rate of about 600 watts.Last edited by wildbears; 07-25-2023, 03:09 PM.
