How did we get so stupid? There was a time when the kinds of things these nitwits way on TV would have ended their career.

The cloud forecasts for the eclipse path were 90% wrong. In S.E. Oklahoma, a stark clear morning sky transitioned into heavy overcast by 10:00 a.m. Just when the eclipse started the clouds thinnned a bit . . . and then thinned some more. It was perfect as the eclipse progressed to total and back again. Great day for our family. Both my adult children and their young families stayed with others of us in a lodge for the weekend. The 9-year old granddaughter's birthday was Monday. Her dad brought out the cake with the candles lit right at totality. Fun!

I walked away from everyone to watch and listen to the birds. They stopped singing and just sat there.
The crows that are usually hopping around on the ground stopped and stared straight ahead without
even flinching their heads. I walked towards one and still nothing, I stopped about twenty feet away.
As the light returned it was as if a spell had been removed. It got quite a bit cooler and I put on my
jacket. Mosquitos came out, which was strange because we hadn't had them yet this year. It was the
warmest day we've had this spring though. Some said that they heard the coyotes start howling.
They'd predicted some high thin clouds, but it was pretty clear.
As I mentioned earlier, the traffic was unbelievable. Phone GPS was diverting drivers to the back roads
but it didn't take into account the this is "Mud Season" and some are practically impassable.
I thought about thos UConn fans that thought they'd be home in time to watch the game live on TV.

Best Eclipse story yet.. And a great account of the event in Vermont.

The cake story gets even better . . .. The nine-year old granddaughter loves science things in general, but especially astronomical facts. My bro-in-law is an actual "space scientist" at JPL in Pasadena and he and my son (the nine-year old's daddy) worked as an intern there one summer. My daughter is a great baker and cake decorator. She made the nine-year old (her niece) an awesome looking cake that had dark black chocolate frosting with several well known constellations laid out against the black sky. The whole thing was over the top, but it will be a birthday Little Lizzy will never forget.
