Twist a length of toilet paper into a rope and tie around the pipe just below the joint. The loose ends will sag if water is present. It make take several days before a slow leak is detected.

That installation won't pass code here in VT....
Must be metal pipe for three feet off the appliance including valves, mixing valve and expansion tank if necessary.
Relief valve must be metal and extend to within 6" of the floor with the end cut at a 45 degree angle.
But yeh, a paper towel or tissue under a suspected leak will show up if one drop hits it.
**One mistake I see often is opening a valve up all the way and jamming the packing nut. Instead, open all the

In the movie,The Money Pit;
Plumber shows up in a Lincoln and gives Tom Hanks a crazy $$ quote on some plumbing. Hanks goes,"you didn't even come in and look at the job"?
Plumber says something like.... I was here 3 years ago,it hasn't changed.... or some such.
My #3 son has a nice 700k house in Raleigh. A cpl years ago he calls for a quote on a R&R (remove,replace) for a small'ish bathroom fiberglass shower. I swear,plumber gave him a 10k quote basically doing the same as the movie scene above. Hunt goes,"you didn't even look at it". Plumber tells him it's the same bathroom as dzs of your neighbors,bwahaha.
