I don't use social media such as Facebook, messenger or others. Just the standard text on my Iphone. But I was awakened by a friend. For a year he pestered me to download the "Telegram" app. It is a text app that groups can be set up or you can just individually chat with someone. Free world wide, Pictures and other junk can be shared. It is encrypted so many groups that don't want to go to jail or be shot use it in difficult world locations. I once tried to find some interesting group to join and was directed to a porno site in Uganda. Yikes. But one feature I use is that a "secret" chat can be set up between users that is not saved on servers (whatever that means) and self destructs in a time interval of your choice, 3 seconds up to much longer intervals. It is fast, much faster than my normal text stuff. You can even make a phone call over it and it is super clear. Was texting a buddy in China..both ways free. Chat groups can be thousands of users large. Just thought I'd mention it.

From Wikipedia: Telegram's security model has received notable criticism by cryptography experts. They criticized the general security model of permanently storing all contacts, messages and media together with their decryption keys on its servers by default and by not enabling end-to-end encryption for messages by default.[24][25] Pavel Durov has argued that this is because it helps to avoid third-party unsecure backups, and to allow users to access messages and files from any device.[26] Cryptography experts have furthermore criticized Telegram's use of a custom-designed encryption protocol that has not been proven reliable and secure.
Does that final comment refer to the closed source server code, or also apply to the open source client code? Seems like common sense that the client code would use open source crypto.

We've used WhatsApp for years to communicate with family in Europe and South America. No issues at all. I know that Facebook bought it a few yeas ago so I would not be surprised if it is not very secure. We just text and send pictures so probably ok from a security standpoint. Do you guys (and gals) have any issues with Whatsapp? (hope I'm not hitting a nerve here)
