    LA Fires Area ?

I'm considering taking on another Motoquest transporter ride from Long Beach to Portland OR and I'm wondering what the area is like up along Mulholland, the Rock Store, and rambling on down to the PCH north of Malibu. I didn't get a chance to ride that area the last time I was out there and it's on my bucket list. Anyone know if it's a problem there?

cjs350 is an older fella so is probably sleeping. You have to gently wake the geezer to get a response.

Good question. The Coast Highway from Santa Monica North through Malibu got really hammered. Last I heard was tha PCH through southern Malibu is closed to general non-resident / non-emergency equipment. Here's a link https://www.malibucity.org/AlertCent...es-Malibu-3463 but it was last updated a week ago. Typically if you wanted to ride Mulholland you had several access points from the PCH, they would be Topanga Canyon, Malibu Canyon, Canan Dune Road. When I want to ride Mulholland to the Rock Store I take the PCH pretty far north to Latigo Canyon which intersects Mulholldand near the Rock Store - http://rock-store.com/ - I haven't been through there since before the fires so I do not know how much of the roads are open or closed.

An excellent source CA Highway information is at this link, https://roads.dot.ca.gov/roadscell.php - just plug in the Highway Number and you get a current read out. For the PCH, which is Route 1 this is the read:
      SR 1

      [IN THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA]
Is closed from Chautauqua Blvd /in Los Angeles/ to Sweetwater Canyon Rd /in Malibu/ (Los Angeles Co) - Due to slide removal - Motorists are advised to use an alternate route

Northbound traffic is reduced to 1 lane from the McClure Tunnel /in Santa Monica/ to Chautauqua Blvd /in Pacific Palisades/ (Los Angeles Co) - Due to a wildfire

Southbound traffic is reduced to 1 lane from Sweetwater Canyon Rd to Carbon Canyon Rd /in Mailbu/ (Los Angeles Co) - Due to wildfire

This means that you cannot get from the southern end of Rt 1 where access is from Rte 10 (an interstate) But there are work arounds, if you want to send me a DM I can probably make a few recommendations. Also, note that Rte 1 from Big Sur - to Carmel is still closed. When are you planning your trip?

The trip would be in early April to move the bikes up to Portland. One of the reasons I'm considering passing on this opportunity is the closure interruption farther north in the middle of the coast. It doesn't look like there's a convenient detour if I wanted to ride that far north on the PCH from LA. Of course, that might mean that there's no traffic to deal with if I wanted to ride up to the wash out and turn around.

Thanks for all the tips on finding that status of the area. It's been over 40 years since I've been up in that area and even then it was in a rental car. It's kinda hard to think about enjoying a trip there when so many people are suffering incredible devastation. Maybe I'll start checking on the status of the roads and passes around Yosemite. The last time we did a transporter in April that was all closed up due to snow. We connected then but didn't get a chance to meet. Maybe next time.

CJS350 is one hell of a tour guide, so long as you can keep up! He knows the shortcuts to the shortcuts. Matt's kinda guy.
