The new Scout, being built at a new plant in SC, is a hybrid with electric motors, batteries, and an ICE. The ICE runs a generator to extend range when the batteries run out of juice. Two versions will be available.
We drove past the plant last February. It was under construction at the time as were two new expressway interchanges, the latter to service the new plant. The plant is huge.

FYI Twenty or more years ago, Burt Rutan (of around the world flying fame and inventor) was giving an early model Prius by Toyota. They told him to keep it and drive it like he owned it, wanting only his feedback. He liked the Prius, but said Toyota had the ICE-Electric balance wrong. He said put in a much smaller ICE engine (heck, I think then they already made only 70 HP or something) and use that engine to only recharge the batteries when necessary. There would be no need for complicated interfacing and transmissions. The weight saved could either improve milage outright, or could be used for additional battery capacity. On long trips, you might need to pull off the road and recharge, but at least you had the confidence that you could still continue if the batteries ran short.
It sounds as if SCOUT heard him, whether or not Toyota did.
