Yes, there are more tigers in Texas than in the wild:
                • Wild tigers: There are fewer than 4,000 wild tigers left in the world.
                • Texas tigersCaptivity: More tigers live in captivity in the United States than in the wild globally.
                Don't Mess With Texas.

                  2,000 - 5,000 is a pretty big spread. You'd think they'd know better?

Agreed. More general info: In 2018,
the Texas Department of State Health Services recorded only 50 tigers in the state. However, estimates suggest that Texas has between 2,000 and 5,000 privately owned tigers. This could make Texas the second-largest tiger population in the world, after India.
Many tigers in Texas are kept in backyards and are not registered with the state. Animal rights advocates say that many tigers go unregistered because county enforcement of the registration rules is often lax.
There is no state law forbidding tiger ownership in Texas, but owners are supposed to register their tigers. However, both Bexar County and the City of Houston ban the ownership of wild animals.
