I agree with the overblown aspect, but its a sad day when the best and most current news on the virus isn't from FOX or CNN or ABC or NBC or BBC, its the Weather Channel's web page. (John Hopkins's is good too.) Even then the news is lacking key information. I would like to see true mortality rates by age group, is it more or less contagious than the flu, 80% of cases are mild but 10% of those hospitalized die so what was the age group of that 10%, in that 10% how many had "underlying conditions", and stuff like that. I'm very analytical and the lack of real info bugs me. I get that the mortality rate in the US cannot be calculated yet due to not enough data on total recoveries. (Mortality is calculated as deaths plus recovered / deaths. It is NOT deaths / total infected.) It's as if the major news sources want drama (even panic) over facts and to me that's more scary than the virus.

I'm pretty convinced that nearly everyone will get this virus and as the numerator grows, the fatality statistic will come into more accurate focus - hopefully much lower. Even though there's some signs that this virus is worse than more common flu; and, it's pretty unusual for something to spread so fast like it did in Italy; no one really knows yet if it's more fatal than any other flu strain.. I think we should all be prepared for the US to be in the same situation as Italy within the next few months.

I've been saying since The Donald got elected that we'd all be better off if we all turned off the news - all of it. Cable news in particular makes more money the more mad (or scared) they can make you. Ethical journalism is dead.

Thanks.That matches what I found earlier today. What surprises me the most is the added drama in the news and the lack of available testing in the USA. There are a few reputable pharmaceuticals that are showing some promises but nothing final as yet. And today JHU stats are off. This morning they were showing 12 recovered in the US, now JHU shows 6. I guess there's not a single good source of info out there.

Look around and see if you can find an article I read the other day comparing Italy and Korea. Italy is suffering terribly while Korea is bad but they have a handle on it. Testing and possibly different cultures make a difference. Both countries have a lot of smokers. But testing and knowing where the flow of the illness is really makes a difference in how things go. This country got off to a slow start with testing ability. WHO offered test kits and our CDC said no thanks. Then the CDC kits were no good to top it off. Plus their strict who to test rules muddied the waters. China screened for fever everywhere, getting on a train, bus, going into your apartment, you name it. Knowledge is the key. Sending someone home with a fever symptom to isolate them selves is great but if three generations of relatives live there also, not so good. They have fever centers left over from SARS knowledge. Sick, go to a fever center get tested very carefully, even a cat scan with a portable device to look at your lungs. This country is not ready for this level of health care and this type of illness. We will see as the next few weeks unfold, but the Chinese are snickering up their sleeves at us and our predicament.
