Andrea Iannone Gets an 18-Month Ban for Doping from the FIM

18 months after acknowledging no intent on Iannone's part is pretty stiff.

A couple of anecdotes:

That concept of not being careful enough comes home to roost here in that Naval Academy from time to time. A Second Class Mid (one year from graduating) was left a gym bag by her graduating boyfriend. She threw it in the bottom of her closet and promptly forgot about it. During a subsequent room check, the bag was turned out and contained some pain killers under a prescription for the now Ensign that graduated that gave her the bag; She was dismissed from the academy and owed the Navy well over $100,000 for her education and because it was technically a drug offense, she ws not offered the opportunity to enlist and work it off.

Another story very close to home is about a young Mid on spring break a month from graduating in the top 100 in his class, athlete, model Midshipman. One of the nitwit girls at the beach house thought it would be funny to slip him an adderall when he asked for an asprin. They told him what they'd done before he returned from spring break and he went in promptly and volunteered the episode to the USNA administration. They tested him positive for adderall and promptly separated him with no offer to work off his education as an enlisted. He hired representation and got his debt to the Navy reduced from nearly $200,000 to $140,000 and spent the first several years of his career paying that off. To make matters worse, even though he qualified for his degree in systems engineering, they denied it to him even though he had to pay for it. He ended up going to another university to get his degree and went on to a successful career outside the Navy, $140K+ poorer because he unwittingly let something in his body. And by the way, he had no further tests or academic requirements so there was no reason he would have taken the adderall to "cheat" the system.

The moral to all those stories, and hence the reaction for Iannone, is that knowing the consequences and the zero tolerance policy is there any excuse to not being extremely vigilant about everything in and around you?
