Wow, what a mess is right. I can see a property developer looking to monetize the land value ending future racing there - and Monterey letting them do it for the revenue.
I regret that I didn't race there in 1974 or '75 for the AMA races. I had a TA-250 lined up to race on in Novice 250, but lacked the funds to go up there from L.A. for a whole week of racing, sleeping and eating. What the hell was I thinking? I should have stole the money. I would be out by now.
Cathy and I watched the races from the hillside near the Corkscrew. I would have finished mid-pack based on some of the guys that I raced against regularly. It would have been fun. I regret never having the thrill of peering over the edge of the Corkscrew before diving off into that hard right and then fast left. Oh, well. I remember Cal Rayborn and Reggie Pridmore on their 4-stroke H-D and BMW fighting with the 2-strokes for top-ten finishing honors.
