    Arkansas Bike Trip

Needed a getaway and had really been looking forward to this rally. At 1100 miles one way it's a bit of a hike for me but I really love this rally. Threw the bike in the back of the truck and drove it to The Eddie Layton's house which is about halfway. Got there and unpacked the bike and Eddie strolls out of his house, I thought he would be already gone but his plans had changed and he couldn't make the rally. Was good to see Eddie as always. I had reservations in Central City, KY, about 2.5 hours away and it was after 3 then so we talked a bit and I hit the road. Was glad to get to Central City, I left home a little after 4, about 20 minutes away I realized I didn't have the key to my bike so had to go back. So left again about 5. It had been a long day. Stayed at the charming Super 8 in Central City.

You know, Super 8 has it right, they know their niche. They're like, I've got a mirror in my house, I know I'm not a 10, heck, I'm not even a nine, but I'm no ordinary 8, I'm a Super 8!

In the morning I was a bit tired, and the temps were in the high 30s, so waited a bit until it got to 40 something, put on my electrics and hit the road. Always like crossing the Mississippi and unfortunately I didn't stop for any pictures but all along they were getting in crops, mostly beans and cotton. Crossed up near Paducah. Seems you just get a vibe along the Mississippi. Got behind a guy in a VW who was obviously late for a very important appointment so made some good time along there. Really like the northern part of Arkansas, just some beautiful country and scenery. This is Lake Norfolk.

Since Jasper is in a dry county I made a quick stop at the last liquor store and was excited to find they had Warsteiner dark beer. Was a nice liquor store. Needed to make a 1730 arrival so I wouldn't miss dinner. Bill Morgan and Dale were cooking fish and frog legs for supper. No self-respecting southern boy would miss fish and frog legs for dinner. Here are the boys cooking it up.

Here's Bill and Dale cooking, and Tyson was the designated shaker. He put the fish and frog legs in the mix and shook it up, cause no one can shake it like Tyson.

Here are the frog legs. I think some of those frogs had been working out.

As they would say when I lived in southern Louisiana, Boy, boy, boy de good yeah! What an amazing meal provided by Bill and Dale and a great way to start the rally.

Then it was fire pit, drinking, perhaps some lies. I wanted to see a bit of my Astros and the Yankees so I wasn't up too late. That also gives me plausible deniability should I be required to testify about any unsavory behavior.

Wanted to be the best rider in my group so I went out by myself on Friday. They love me so much in Arkansas they named a town after me.

Some pictures of what I was riding through. Just hard to find a bad road up there.

So that was it for Friday. The next day Rob and I were headed to Memphis and Clarksdale, Mississippi for the Deep Blues Fest.

Saturday morning Rob and I said our goodbyes to head for Memphis and Clarksdale. Was so good to see some folks I rarely see like Karl, Jeff, Tyson and Cathy, Curt, Gary and Mike. Had some new folks make the rally that added a lot, Jim, Dan and Ron. Had some good conversations with both Jim and Dan. Just a great group of folks to ride with and be around. So on to Memphis. Here's the Lorraine Motel, now the National Civil Rights Museum. Was a beautiful day and lots of folks were out.

Our objective for this trip was Memphis ribs. Central BBQ Memphis ribs. Central BBQ was right across the street.

And here's what we came for. For me a half rack half and half. Half dry rub, half sauce.

Then on to Clarksdale down route 61, which follows along the river for a ways. Just some huge fields of beans and cotton, and the road was as straight as a gun barrel. We got to Clarksdale a little after 4, checked into the Comfort Inn and hit town abut 5. We walked around a bit before finding a venue to camp out in. Some pictures from town.

The Hooker Hotel. We got free breakfast at the Comfort Inn. I wonder what you got here? Probably a John Lee Hooker record. Oh wait, you thought I meant..... That's just wrong.
The Hooker Hotel is right next to the Squeeze Box. Make of that what you will.

Then we hit the Ground Zero Blues Club. It's right across from the Delta Blues Museum, but that was closed by the time we got there. .Morgan Freeman is part owner. Here's Ted Drosdowski. When we walked in he was playing slide guitar with a napkin holder.

The next band was La La Craig, she was a real banger on the keyboards and put on a good show. If nothing else she wins the title for best song title for her song "I've got a five second rule but a two second dog". Gotta be quick at La La's house.

The young lady on the left playing guitar was just phenomenal. Her name was Jaxx Nassar, lived locally in Clarksdale. She wasn't a flaming guitar player, although I got the feeling she could be if she wanted, but her phrasing was exquisite. Every thing just fit so well, I was mesmerized.

Then these girls walked out. Three drop dead gorgeous sisters from Mississippi, one sang and played guitar, one played bass and one was quite a good drummer. The guy playing guitar with them was good too. Those girls were as cute as a litter of speckled puppies. Rob and I thought it only decent to stick around for their set, which was really good. I think the guitar player that did most of the singing had a smile on her face the whole time and you could tell they really enjoyed what they were doing.

I got some video of them but need to do a little work to post it.

Rob had a burned out low beam so the plan was for him to follow me so he could run his high beam. When I got out of the club my low beam was out too so we both high beamed it back to the motel.

Back to the old Comfort Inn where we watched the Astros get past the Yankees in a really exciting game to go to the World series. It was a shame either team had to lose but since someone did I'm glad it was the Yankees.

Left the next morning to head to Eddie's to load stuff back in my truck for the trip home.

On the way home Mississippi must have heard what Arkansas did so they named a town after me too. What a great bunch of folks.

By about 5 I make it back to Eddie's but he wasn't around. Just as I got the bike in the truck and strapped down he drives in. So to recap, he comes out of the house just after I've unloaded, and shows up just after I've loaded up and strapped down. Which brings us to a multiple choice question. Was Eddie:

        A) Sitting around the corner watching until I got the bike packed up
        B) Had his neighbor text him when I got the bike packed up
        C) Driving back and forth past his driveway until I got the bike packed up
        or
        D) It just bees that way sometimes

Anyone who doesn't say "D" doesn't know Eddie very well.

Here's my face shield on arrival. I need to get some of that stuff you clean face shields with. What do they call that, water? Yeah, I need some of that.

I sat down with Eddie for about a half hour and had a beer and caught up a bit.Time spent talking with Eddie is time well spent. He offered a room for the night but I wanted to get to the east side of Lexington so I wouldn't get caught up in traffic the next morning so I headed out. That worked well and saved me an hour or so the next morning. Made it back home about 4. A great time, great friends, great weather. Thanks to Eddie for letting me park my truck at his house, thanks to Curt for setting up the rally and a big thanks to Bill and Dale for a fantastic dinner! As I said, I really love this rally. See you all down the road somewhere.

Thanks, Wes, for taking the time to shoot the pictures and write up this great ride report. Next time you make an AHR, we'll go on some roads that don't lead to Eureka Springs! Every year at this rally I learn more and more about music. Just an added benefit of being around interesting folks like you.

So, kind of answering you and Tim at once, using Austin as a reference THCR is about 1500 one way for me. That's a hump. Not out of the question but a hump none the less. Would love to make it. Regarding staying longer at the Ark, there is the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, AR the weekend prior to Columbus Day. This year Kenny Wayne Shepard and Delbert McLinton were there. Down side, my wife's birthday is the 14th. Otherwise I'd suggest we meet there and ride around for a week.

April can be a challenge with the MotoGP & tax day being about the same time each year, not to mention your wife's birthday! Regardless, you have an open invitation my brother... you can always make it an adventure & bring your wife with you!

My buddies & I did the King Biscuit for about 5 years running back in the late '90's & early 2K's and always had a ball. They'd open up what were normally boarded up buildings in Helena that were at one time purportedly real "juke joints" back in the day & turn them into bars with live music. Generally, these places would feature groups who were not as well known as the main attractions on the main stages.

In those days, we were scamming our way into festivals by faking whatever color wristband was required to get in. We'd go to the event entrance & see what color wristband you got with paid admission, then go back to the car where we had different colored vinyl covered 3 ring binders & pick a color that matched or was close, cut out individual wristbands & voila... in like Flynt! One year we scammed our way into the VIP area & one afternoon we caught an act, Ronnie Earl & the Broadcasters, who I had never heard of before. I was blown away & he's now one of my fav blues guitar players. He played for 1.5 hours in front of about 40 people but played like there was a 1000. My personal fav album of his is Blues Guitar Virtuoso Live in Europe... fantastic.
