    SGR 2025 - September 3 - September 7th

SGR 2025 - originally posted by Kneedragger

Once again this year, we'll be celebrating SGR, for the 18th consecutive year. Base camp will again be the Timberline Lodge, 890 Highway 4, Arnold, CA 95223, 209-795-1053. We will be checking in on Wednesday, September 3rd, and checking out on Sunday, September 7th (your choice).

When making a reservation, please mention that you are with the BMW motorcycle group that was there last year following Labor Day weekend. We had a great turnout last year and all are welcome. We hope to see you there!

Joe, I would love to make SGR, but it falls on a bad time for me. Our Choctaw tribal gathering is the same time and I have long-standing family obligations there. That part of Northern California is still spectacular and not yet ruined by the "progress."

Charlie, now that I'm an alumnus, I got to figure out how to get back. Maybe a "fly and rent" this time. I'll see if an of my eastern flatlanders want to make the trip.

Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_0392.JPG Views:	1 Size:	156.8 KB ID:	63456 Can I tell you guys my Sierra's story? Well, I will anyway.

Christmas 2015, three couples with 5 kids in total, flew into LA and stayed at Universal Studios for a few days, then got a bus to Vegas where we spent New Years Eve. From Vegas we hired 3 Cruise America RV's and headed out to the Grand Canyon for a couple of days. Probably around the 4th of January we drove up the east side of the Sierra's and stayed the night at Beatty, Nevada. Next day we drove west across Death Valley on the 190 through Stovepipe Wells, Panamint Springs and stopped at the Eastern Sierra Visitor Centre on the 136 just south of Lone Pine. Our plan was to be in San Francisco in two days time and drop off the RVs and hire cars for the next part of the trip.

So we're at the visitor centre looking at maps to work out our route north and then shoot west across the mountains to San Francisco. But the dude at the centre heard us talking and said we wouldn't get across where we were planning, being winter and all. We didn't really have this part thought through properly and were just travelling by the seat of our pants.

So we looked at more maps and worked out we needed to head south and then take 58 west across to Bakersfield. So we talk to this the guy at the visitor centre and say we'll look for an RV park in Bakersfield for the night. The guy looked at us and sort of said "maybe you want to go a bit more north from Bakersfield", and we're like "nah, it'll be getting late so we'll just stay in Bakersfield and then move on". He tried again but we were set on our plan so he shrugged his shoulders and let us go.

Off we go south and missed a turn somewhere and ended up seeing the aircraft graveyard at Mojave.

Eventually we get into Bakersfield and immediately we see an RV park with a cop car parked at the entry so kept going a bit. Eventually the lead RV pulled over and we pulled in behind. We were parked in front of a motel that looked like the one in Breaking Bad and it was then we realised why the visitor centre guy was trying to encourage us to head more north for the night.

One of the kids Googled Bakersfield and told us it was the murder capital of California.

So as suggested, we headed north and ended up in Visalia.

Next day we drove north and I'm pretty certain we made it the Yosemite Vally Visitor Centre. It was snowing as we were getting there and in the half hour or so that we were in the carpark, at least 5cm of snow fell. So we headed back down and stayed in Mariposa that night.

That was the last night in the RV's for us and we spent it shooting cans with an air rifle in the RV park. One of my mates bought the air rifle and 1000 pellets at a Walmart in Las Vegas. Next morning he gave it away to someone in the park.

This. I love stories like this. On the way to THCR, in some small Texas town, we had one of these try to take us at the green light. We just waved and went on our merry way.

Alright, y'all, I will be there with bells on! Flying and renting. I have a room booked at the Timberline, and it has two beds, so if another attendee wants to share a room, I'll consider it.

Headed to SGR but first we stopped here. The food was good and the people friendly. They said they were crazy to put a Kafe in the middle of a farm. The Marines didn't think so. They landed in a Chinook and the rest is history. Home of the Ozark Skydive Center. BTW, just a day ride from Yellville.

Nevada Hwy 722. Right along here it had rained and there were free range cattle. In addition there was one prairie chicken that decided to take flight just as we passed at speed. The hand guard did.

My rental was a Harley PanAmerica from Eagleriders in San Francisco. My reaction? It wasn't too bad. When I got the bike, there was no manual, so I couldn't figure out the controls for the electronic suspension, so I couldn't tailor my ride with that. If I had been able to do that, I feel like I would have been more impressed , But as it was, I still like my 2009 R12GS a lot more.
