    Dakotas Trip 2022

At some point in the past couple of years I realized that I had ridden in all of the Lower 48 States EXCEPT North Dakota. This had to be remedied. Also, I didn't want to just touch my toe down in the state; I wanted to get the full experience. So I contacted the ND Dept of Tourism, got their maps and travel guides, and I also bought a book about tourist attractions in the state. I planned a route that brought me into the state at Fargo, went north and west to Williston, then south to Dickinson, and then further south into South Dakota. I also noticed on maps that US Route 52 goes from my neighborhood all the way to Fargo, ND, and beyond, running to the Canadian border. I planned to run 52 nearly all the way to Fargo.

I told my buds about the trip, and several guys volunteered to come along for all or part of the trip. Wes Ripley likes to visit towns named Ripley, and there is one on 52 in southern Ohio, so he signed on for the first day or so. He rode to my house the day before our July 12 departure. Dale Ueber and Bill Morgan joined me the next day when I got to Indiana. And Jeff Stewart met the three of us in Williston, ND. A real moveable feast.

Wes and I left out the 12th. I apologize that I didn't take any photos that day, possibly because that stretch of 52 is very familiar to me. I know Wes has I picture I took of him in front of the Ripley, Ohio, welcome sign, so maybe he'll post that up. US 52 runs north from NC into Virgina at Fancy Gap, then crosses the New River and continues on to Wytheville, and over two mountain ranges to get into Bluefield, West Virginia. Then it runs through the coal country part of southwest WV, in the Hatfield-McCoy trails area, and then runs up the Kentucky border to Huntington, WV. Then it crosses the Ohio River into Ohio, and it runs alongside the river all the way across the state to Cincinnati. Ripley is about 50 miles east of Cincinnati. We checked out Ripley that Tuesday afternoon, and we spent the night across the river in Mayfield, KY.

The next morning Wes left for home early, and I got an early start toward Indiana. I was supposed to meet Bill and Dale in Lebanon, IN, at 11 am. We all got there early, and right at the same time. Good omen!
We spent the night in Dixon, IL, and crossed over into Iowa the next day. North of Dubuque, we got detoured around and lost 52 , but the locals gave us a scenic way to get back to it.
Here are a couple of shots overlooking the Mississippi Valley.

On through Minnesota, we stayed in Buffalo, west of Minneapolis. The next day we rolled into Fargo.

One of the attractions at the Welcome Center was the wood chipper from the Coen Brothers' movie "Fargo", the one in which Steve Buscemi gets mulched. A real class act.

After a night in a 1 star motel of my choosing, we headed across the state to Williston. The northwest part of the state is covered with oil wells, and they were still drilling. Halliburton had a big presence in Williston. We spent the night in Williston, and Jeff met us there. The next day we went to the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, which is mostly Badlands, but it also has Bison and prairie dogs.

We camped in Theodore Roosevelt National Park on one of our Sturgis Rally trips. A herd of wild horses roamed the grounds.

Looks like a great trip, Rob. A lot of work to get one last state, but at least you had decent company!

You might have sensed that there are not a lot of tourist attractions i9n North Dakota. If so, you would be right. But there was one thing I read about that sounded unique, if not exactly attractive. It's called The Enchanted Highway. It's a 20-some mile road that has giant metal sculptures placed every 5 miles or so.

Did I mention it was hot? The guys with thermometers on their bikes were reporting temps of 111 and 113 degrees this day after we saw the sculptures. We continued south, heading for the Black Hills in South Dakota. The land along the way was very sparsely populated, and after a while, all four of us were all running low on gas. Bill's GPS said that there was a station 20 miles north (the wrong way), but when we got there, it was closed up with a For Sale sign on it. Desperation set in, as the Range readout dropped to single digits on our bikes. In Redig, SD, Bill pulled over and arranged to buy two 5 gallon cans of gas from Greta, the postmistress (and apparently sole resident) of Redig. It was maybe 6 gallons total. But it got us the 50 miles south to the next gas station in Belle Fourche, SD. Sigh of relief! Adventure touring at its best!

          More later.

The Black Hills have some really good roads, and we were on several of them seeing the sights.

After two nights in Deadwood, we easterners decided to head east, while Jeff headed to Wyoming, Montana, and who knows where; he's still on the road. But first he accompanied us to the Badlands N.P. via Wall Drug Store..

Thanks to the guys who joined me on the trip. It wouldn't have been nearly as much fun without you.

I;ve flown over the Badlands several times in a private plane. I would love to visit on a motorcycle tour. I especially want to spend some time around the Roosevelt Ranch area. Teddy's interests were wide ranging. It's a crock that he is currently portrayed often as a characterization of a buffoon.

Covered that route last year and what a trip!. Wall Drug was just blah. Food was terrible! Anyway, got that checked off the bucket list. Mt Rushmore was spectacular, the sheer size of it standing at the bottom. Great pics Rob.

The Roosevelt Hotel is the last building on the right. There's a deck above the main entrance with an outdoor bar and piano during the Sturgis Rally..

The deck provides a great spot to look down Main Street and relax.

In the late 70's and early 80's, I was a geologist on a uranium project near Deadwood. Local guys who worked for me said there was the most pleasant whorehouse still up and running. The law knew about it, of course, but the girls running it, the customers, and the locals, all strictly followed the code of silence, and there were no problems. The guys said the "girls" weren't 8's, 9's or 10's. but were sweet and friendly as could be. I simply took their word for all this, despite them urging me to come along one night.

Here's the only picture known to exist of day one of Rob's big route 52 and beyond adventure. We rode hard that day, I think Ripley Ohio was going faster than we were. On top of that my bike was running a little hot, I was never so glad to ride through a rainstorm, it cooled me and the bike off. Still great to share day one of Rob's ride. Interestingly enough, when Rob and I were having dinner in Maysville, the restaurant was right across the street from the Enterprise rental place that I got a truck at when my K12 RS met an untimely end there at one of the Blue Lick Kentucky rallies.

Thanks for taking the time to write this up Rob. That heat is pretty wild.. Do you regularly pour water down your jacket and fill up your gloves? I find it works really well for a short time and then your dry again.

The gasoline stations in Mexico are like the USA used to be. Full service with water and air right at the pump. Just ask and your tire pressure is checked and topped up if necessary. It makes it easy to pull up even if you are not buying gasoline and squirt yourself.
