    Western NC to OBX

Over 45 years ago a friend and I decided to take a trip to the Outer Banks on our new motorcycles. This is my friend showing our riding gear and how we packed. We barely made it to a gas station that evening as they were locking up and the owner reopened and invited us to a pig picking near his home on Hog Turd Avenue. Really. It was awesome!

So over 45 years later Susan and I decided to retrace parts of that epic adventure. 50 years ago I bought tires here. My 69 mach 1 went through that same bay door shown below. Now it's the bar entrance to the Front Porch and Provisions. The food was great.

The next days lunch was here. Legendary.

Cliffs of the Neuss State Park. We hiked off a bite or two.

We walked 8 miles this day. Twice to food.

One nice thing about a cold November day at the Great Dismal Swamp, no mosquitos or gnats.

Breakfast stop. The oldest continuously operating diner in VA.

Backbone Rock has been a photo op for most of our bikes. A great road when dry. We had damp roads and high wind gust, but hey, it was great!

Final night of the trip. Mad Co. Brew House, Marshall NC. Riding makes us hungry.

We spent the night in the drunk tank at the Old Marshall Jail Hotel. Very interesting place. It was just redone when Helene nearly destroyed it in September 2024. Now it's back.

We got home this morning and as I unloading the bike I saw a nail in the rear tire. No loss of air, and I got to plug it in the warm garage. That was a LOT better than a repair on the side of the road in 31ΒΊ temps.
p.s. That tire has 10,000 miles on it!

Another great trip. Temps ranging from 31ΒΊ to 67ΒΊ. We never did break a sweat in 1195 miles. Amazing enough we didn't gain weight.
Hope y'all are doing well. Speed safe.

    I love these stories.

They make me go straight to Google Maps and try and track the journey.

The only time we've been on the Outer Banks was in July 1996 after the BMW MOA National rally at Morganton, N.C.. We had to wait a couple days to get on the islands because of damage from Hurricane Bertha.

Many years ago, we were at Bike Week staying at Bulow campground and saw a guy wearing a 'Surf Iowa' T-shirt. Great memories for sure.
Those look like the bikes that went to Alaska.

I can't believe Deb let her man Lee, go "surfin' naked!" He's a real 'chick magnet" not to be trusted unchaperoned.
