    Question about washer for bolt

i'm working with s set of washers.

They are flat at the edge on one side but the opposite edge is rounded.

Does the flat side go against the base of the nut, which is also flat?

The attachment site is a slot with rounded inside edges.

According to Google, "When you look at a flat washer there is one side that has a rounded or curve to the edge and the hole. The other side has a sharper edge to it. The side with the sharper edges goes towards the surface to be clamped. The rounded side goes towards the nut or bolt"

Its a byproduct of the mass produced stamping method. Makes sense once you realize how they are made. It is not an intentional design feature.

Same sort of thing with circlips, E clips and their relatives, the sharp edge goes towards where the working force pushes the device. So if you have a clip holding the rocker finger on a valve train, the clip sharp edge faces out.
