If you keep riding you will eventually crash....

If you keep riding you will eventually crash....

How many have heard this from their non riding friends: "If you haven't crashed yet, you will eventually".

    IMHO,

While it is true that riding will always carry some risk, the chances of a crash, per mile ridden, decrease with experience, training, and education.

Obviously you were at the highest risk when you first started riding.

And are at your lowest level of risk currently, assuming you made an effort to constantly improve your riding skills.

Also assuming that you are not pushing the envelope.

I agree with the "common knowledge." I don't think I know anyone who has ridden on the street for more than just a while, that has not crashed. Off road? The same but that is more to be expected.

Just to throw 2 cents into the crash hypothesis, here's a fact. If you are experienced you will likely crash on a nice day when everything is going perfectly and you are NOT exceeding your abilities. Just having a good time and WHAM, the planets go out of alignment. Hopefully it won't happen at all but if it does I hope you have a helicopter and a Class 1 Trauma center nearby. Sometimes you walk away. Sometimes you have to learn how to eat and walk all over again.

Tim, at Gunnison, on a clear day and riding only at 8/10's (50% of the "A-Group's" pace) I had one of those planet alignment things happen. Ask Mike. He was right behind me as I did a nice "bounce-brake thingy" that took me across the center line on a moderate speed blind right-hander. I was headed to the opposite edge for a second or two there, but saved it. The whole thing was weird and gave me an adrenaline rush. Also, it about half pissed me off. So, I just picked up the pace to make myself get over it. Nothing untoward happened in all the other miles of riding in Colorado.

You are, after all, on two wheels. You WILL crash at some point. Dress for the fall, not the ride.

Doubt the motorcycle marketing folks would like/agree with these points...

Yep planets can aligned very quickly. On a brighter note I am off crutches, no longer using a cane and can sit on the GS with my heal on the peg, so maybe one more week and I can actually ride again!

Turtle darted? What speed were you doing? Its stories like this that gives the GSA a bad rap.

                  Will chew your tires off!

An eventual crash is better than money in the bank, a sure thing.

All of mine have been a low speed, which I guess is a good thing.

I was afraid of this happening... and it did 3 years ago (after I started riding).
In Managua, I have LOTS and lots of near misses. People drive and ride very recklessly and they crash everyday.
                    If I posted my videos...
But I've learned to anticipate idiots out there to kill me.

I crashed the first time I rode a Honda 250 back when I was 13.
Then when I was 25, I told my brother I didn't know how to ride a bike and he insisted. Five miles later we were sliding in the asphalt after I couldn't turn the bike. It was a nasty crash, I could see the bones in my knees and elbow.

Then I started riding when I was 35 (I'm 45 now). Read every book on how to be safe, and I hadn't had a crash.
Everyday without crashing was getting more nervous...

So, I went out dirt riding under torrential rain on a road that was being constructed. Very thick mud.
and i was getting all confident on the GS, until the front started to get away from me, and I crashed going about 60kph. Bike's crash guards took the blunt, and nothing else was damaged.
I just slid on the mud, and apparently nothing happened (until a knee starting hurting later).

That was on a Thursday, on a vacation I took for this dirt trip.

On that very Sunday, after I returned home. I took my K12R for a spin (no traction control) and it was raining.
When I was going 5kph on a roundabout a car did not stop for me. So, I tapped the brakes but I was already leaning the bike, and it felt on top of me.
My right shoulder took the hit.
I was in pain for a whole year from that little crash. I even had to stop drinking for full 6 months so the should could heal.

Crashing is bad. I don't intend to crash again... but sometimes you push the envelop and hope for the best.
