Karin and I are enrolled in the Jantzen Phase 3 Covid-19 vaccine study. Had the initial meeting today and will get either the vaccine or a placebo on Wednesday. It should be pretty obvious if we get the vaccine as the effects are similar to a flu shot.

Yes, you are supposed to go to restaurants, like Hooters, and kiss all the waitresses to see if you get something. If you come home with a burning sensation, that is on you.

We're just supposed to carry on as normal. And yes, I hope we get the vaccine. I know that's a bit selfish but heck, why not. The study is aiming to enlist 60000 people so if you're interested I'd check around to see if there's a clinic in your area doing this.

Our primary motivation is to support the science. We figure this is a small effort to help get another vaccine to market. We initially volunteered for the Moderna trial, but were too late for that one. It was very interesting talking to the doctor about vaccines in general and how the various Covid-19 vaccines operate. Very enlightening.

Statistics suggest, with a 50/50 distribution of placebo vs vaccine, there is a 75% chance that at least one spouse will receive the vaccine.

Let's say the vaccine is 90% effective in preventing infection (ignoring attenuation of illness if you do get infected).

And let's assume that infection of one spouse is a major risk factor for infection of the other spouse.

It may be on average then that participation as a couple results in greater than 50% protection for each spouse.

That brings up an interesting idea regarding vaccination strategy. Perhaps it will be better to vaccinate only some people in a house hold initially in order to get the vaccine distributed more widely. And then go back and vaccinate everyone else as more vaccine becomes available. Dunno.

Joe, my understanding is that from the Page 2 study they know what the side effects are, which are what you would expect from a flu shot. The Phase 3 is to figure out what the efficacy is, and to confirm the safety. I am feeling a bit like a guinea pig.... taking a leap of faith that the side effects won't be really bad. We'll see.

Short term side effects are flu-like symptoms. The speed of approval for these studies makes me wonder how thorough the studies have been.
