A friend that lives in Abingdon, VA and works in Johnson City, TN told me this morning that,
Our area is third in THE NATION FOR DEATHS AND FIFTH FOR NEW CASES.
Vermont recorded 46% of our total confirmed cases last month alone.

When I mentioned to someone that I'd like to see comparisons of deaths
for the past several years they scoffed at me and said, "Why?"
I'd just like to see if there are more deaths overall. I'd bet deaths from other
ailments like COPD etc. are down.

I've been wondering that too. I bet the infection rate for flu, common cold, and all other easily transmittable diseases are down. I'd like to see the data though.

I went to a local bar last night in my small rural community. It was packed with people smoking, drinking and watching the Oklahoma Sooners football game. 0 masks. I guess we will see how that works out.

On the other hand, I just watched my Church's virtual worship service. Our regular congregation is about 100 - the same as the bar's. But the Church has decided it is best to be virtual.

I had more fun at the bar, but I might be better off with virtual church.

When I was a child, my father made my sisters go to church and he took me to the bar for his "church services". It wasn't all that fun for me then. I figure today would be different.

To be clear, the issue is with the process of fast-tracking vaccines. The AstraZeneca/Oxford partnership only shows how things could go wrong. Do you really believe the other two pharmaceutical companies wouldn't keep critical data to themselves or subvert the process for financial gain?

The other option is sit back and let the beta testers go first. Be interesting for the employers that make a vaccine mandatory if major side effects or problems arise they will be taking in the liability instead of the pharmaceutical companies

Yeah, the beta testers are healthcare professionals, emergency medical providers, and patients in long-term healthcare facilities. This sounds good to me because if we are in a pandemic we want to beta test with our healthcare providers...

With that said, I am reading more on the vaccines as information comes out and it appears at first blush that they are on to something. I am still waiting until all the old people are weeded out though... I mean inoculated.

Something that I read at the CDC:

Do I need to wear a mask and avoid close contact with others if I have received two doses of the vaccine?

Yes. While experts learn more about the protection that COVID-19 vaccines provide under real-life conditions, it will be important for everyone to continue using all the toolshow to protect yourself and others will offer the best protection from getting and spreading COVID-19. Experts need to understand more about the protection that COVID-19 vaccines provide before deciding to change recommendations on steps everyone should take to slow the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19. Other factors, including how many people get vaccinated and how the virus is spreading in communities, will also affect this decision.

It's interesting to me that experts still have no true understanding of efficacy under real-life conditions.

It would make sense that a person could still carry the virus and not get it.
If you kissed MattB on the lips who has the virus and and then you turned around
and kissed EricM and then he turned around and kissed BillG......

The key sentence here for me is this: "While experts learn more about the protection that COVID-19 vaccines provide under real-life conditions...."

We are being sold a vaccine that has many unknowns and there are little reservations being discussed. Right now, if you watch prime time media or read anything about the vaccines being offered, very little is coming out in the way of caution. It is expected that the lemmings will line up and jump. And maybe they should! But for me, this gives me pause that the live experiments will continue until they don't. Skepticism and paranoia may keep you alive.

The best-case scenario is the rollout goes without a hitch, with minimal (1:1million) deaths due to the vaccine. The worst-case scenario is that our first line of defense against the virus, healthcare providers and EMS, gets devastated with COVID-19 infections losing our ability to care for sick patients, creating chaos in the hospitals, and causing greater death tolls. Somewhere in between is what will happen. Hopefully, it is closer to the best-case scenario.

Joe, I just follow some "common sense" precautions. Of course washing my hands is number one on the list. I always was my hands BEFORE I go to the bathroom. I don't want to get that Covidis stuff on my willy. That would be bad! (And I really don't have to wash afterwards, I just keep my hands 7 or 8 inches away from the end of it.)
