9 hours for me. That includes about an hour for lunch and breaks. Another 30 minutes to help a rider that had gone into heat exhaustion. Most finished in 7 hours or less. A number of older guys did not finish and had to be sagged back. One guy passed out while riding. Don't know how bad the crash was but did get passed by a couple of emergency vehicles. BTW, this was the 62nd and last TOSRV. Traffic has gotten to be a factor making some sections risky.Last edited by wildbears; 09-23-2024, 12:33 PM.

I've done a few Fondo bike events as support on the GSA. One in Lehigh Valley, PA
and a few here in Vermont. It's very rewarding to encourage some of these riders on
to the finnish. Big difference riding in these hills vs a flat rail trails.
One guy flew in from Washington State to do the 100 mile ride, he finished well behind
the other riders, but he finished. The other support riders wanted to get him in the van
and take him back. But I kept going back and checking on him. He was making progress
and just had to make it over the steepest section on Breadloaf Mt and it was a down hill
for four miles and then a cruise for another ten and he's home free. He did it.
What pissed me off was the other support riders that wanted to throw him in the van so
they could go home were all celebrating his finish by escorting him through town to the
finish line. I've been asked to do some since but have had to decline due to other commit-
ments. The pay is usually about $300 plus room and meals.

Mike, Thanks for your efforts. No mountains on the TOSRV but the section from Chilecothe to Waverly is a roller coaster with many short but steep climbs. Wind is also a factor. We were supposed to have a tail wind all day long and of course that turned into a head wind. When I could draft a group, speed was about 14-15 mph.Last edited by wildbears; 09-25-2024, 07:46 AM.
