Salk, Sabin, and the Polio Vaccine.
Jonas Salk developed the first effective polio vaccine using a killed virus. His vaccine became available in 1955 and immediately began to save lives and prevent lifelong crippling. Not in time for one of my best friends from high school. The back of his head was totally flat from lying in an iron lung.
Albert Sabin, working at the University of Cincinnati Children's Hospital, followed with the first live vaccine, available in 1960. It was significantly more effective.
Sabin lived in a modest home in College Hills, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati. I know this since one of my brothers dated his daughter and I drove him to their home one time. I vaguely remember meeting or at least seeing Dr. Sabin in the front doorway.
So did Sabin cash in for millions with his vaccine. No. Neither he or Salk pursued patents on their vaccines.
