Midlife cardiovascular fitness and dementia: A 44-year longitudinal population study in women

A 44-year study revealed that cycling can reduce the risk of dementia by a whopping 88%.

The Swedish study, published in the journal Neurology, followed 1,462 women aged 38 to 60 from 1968 onward. Researchers found that only 5% of highly fit study participants developed dementia compared to 42% in the moderate group.

According to Women's Health, high levels of fitness delayed the age of dementia by 9.5 years compared to those with medium fitness. The highly fit women performed maximum cycling classes, alternating between high intensity and low intensity intervals much like what's performed in standard spin classes.

Question 1: What should I do with this little bit of excess money in my wallet?
Question 2: What should I do instead of chores today?
Question 3: Why I can't go with my wife to her sister's house today?

        There ARE others!

Just realized that most of the people in my riding group aren't as old as the 1982 Trek 970 that I ride.

My 1990 Merckx Corsa SLX is pretty nice, if you overlook the chips, dings, and corrosion on the bottom bracket. BUT, it's a rider. The bikes in this video have never been thrown in the back of a pick-up truck with the bikes of four other friends. I bet I have ridden it 15,000 miles or more since 2000. Upgraded to some shiny Campy stuff about 8 years ago. Made it even better. Shockingly strong rim brakes. I miss less than a half-dozen shifts a year.

This video makes me want to re-restore my '69 Peugeot UO8. It's sort of a Frankenbike with 700c's instead of hte original wheels. But it still has the cool chopperesque chrome front forks.

The icy slick street caused the crash, but , , , the icy slick street minimized the road rash and other injuries to most of the riders.

            Strenuous Exercise and Blood Tests

Multiple lab tests can go askew after intense, hard exercise. Here are a few.

            1. TSH may initially increase and then decrease.
            2. LDL may increase.
            3. BUN may increase (protein breakdown from muscle).
            4. Glucose may increase (stress response).

Some experts recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours after hard exercise before doing lab tests.

Wow. Massive cramp in the inside of thigh last night. Tuesday night ride - 17 miles of hanging on to the end of the "A" group as they cruised around at a pace that was easy for them. Near max effort. Last night, 30 miles of up and downs with two friends at what started out at a sensible pace. Unfortunately, we weren't sensible for long. 25 miles of pretty hard effort on top of the TT the night before was a bit much, I guess. The coconut meringue pie at the restuarant was great, though!

I haven't had cramps that knocked me down like these did for quite a few years, and never in this spot. New bike shoes a few weeks ago might have contributed - I didn't spend any time setting them up or making sure they approximated my worn out shoes.

A magnesium supplement can help prevent those. However, intestinal motility can be increased, at least initially.

I definitely took magnesium, calcium, and potassium before going to bed. No further cramps. I also hydrated pretty well during the ride and after. I think it was just the cumulative effort of the two days.

CORRECTION: My red/orange and yellow, Trek 970, road bike, was produced for 1983. It was the last year the 970 had Columbus SL tubing. I purchased it at Montgomery Cyclery in Montgomery, Ohio. It has been upgraded(?) from the Shimano 600, 8-speed, group set to the 105, 11-speed, group set. Unfortunately, the 105 is significantly more finicky than the 600 and requires much more maintenance (like changing the shifting cables on an annual basis). The 600 set, now on my 3 Rensho, cirterium bike, has only needed new cables times once! And works as good as new with very positive and much easier shifting. Shifting effort is significantly less than on the 105.

              CORRECTION: JUST THE MENDELSSOHN SCORE.

Best Exercises and Time of Day to Boost Testosterone

To boost testosterone, incorporate resistance training (especially compound lifts like squats and deadlifts) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) into your routine, focusing on heavy weights and lower reps for strength training. For timing, afternoon workouts may be more beneficial as the cortisol-to-testosterone ratio is more favorable, potentially leading to a larger, more effective T boost, though working out when it fits your schedule is better than not exercising at all.

Hard afternoon workouts, or evening runs, really mess with my sleep. I will spring wide awake an hour or so after I first get to sleep. Hard morning workouts don't have the same effect.
