Apparently Wout didn't break his kneecap or any other bones. BUT, his knee is really screwed up. The curve on which he crashed, claimed riders several years ago, too. It probably wasn't the wet road, but the decreasing radius that caught them out. To the riders it looked like a normal curve to the left, but it was unlike the ones before. It was also in a fast section that was beyond most of the perceived "dangerous corners."

          From Newmax....

U.S. traffic deaths jumped 10.5% in 2021 to 42,915, the highest number killed on American roads in a single year since 2005.

In 2022, the number of pedestrians killed rose 0.7% to 7,522, the most since 1981. The number of cyclists killed rose 13% to 1,105 in 2022, the most since at least 1980.

Caused by covid, global warming, supply chain issues, corporate greed, or Trump,

          Also in the news...

Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau both died in a bike accident after being hit by a suspected drunk driver while riding their bikes down a country road in Salem County, New Jersey, near their family hometown.

The Gaudreau brothers were riding their bikes on County Route 551 North when they were allegedly struck by Higgins from behind, according to the New Jersey State Police.

Higgins was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee northbound behind a sedan, SUV and the Gaudreau brothers around 8:20 p.m. on Thursday evening, police said. According to state troopers, Higgins initially moved into the southbound lanes and passed the slower-moving sedan. The SUV in front of Higgins then moved to the middle of the road to safely pass the biking Gaudreau brothers on the right side of the road. However, Higgins then attempted to pass the SUV on the right, hitting Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau from behind and fatally injuring both brothers, according to the highway patrol.
Johnny was with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Other than not riding on streets, I don't know how to avoid this type of accident. About the best you can do is to have a bright flashing back light on the bike.

Drunk driving fatalities accounted for 31% of all motor vehicle traffic fatalities in the United States in 2014. The rate of alcohol impairment among drivers involved in fatal crashes in 2014 was almost 4 times higher at night than during the day (34% versus 9%), and the percent of drunk drivers involved in fatal crashes during the weekend was almost double versus during the week (29% versus 16%).

The Most Dangerous Seasons and Holidays to Drive include Christmas, the summer, and other holidays including Thanksgiving weekend (the evening before is often referred to as Drunksgiving), New Year's, and Labor Day.

Every weekday night, from 10PM to 1AM, one in 13 drivers is drunk (BAL?0.08%). Between 1AM and 6AM on Saturday and Sunday mornings, 1 in 4 drivers has alcohol on board and 1 in 7 drivers is drunk.

Well, so much for predawn weekend rides.

Interestingly, until a few years ago, the driver that killed these guys would not have been DUI at .087. Many states had a .100 threshold while others were even higher. I know people that have participated in demonstrations where they TRY to reach past .10. Not one said he or she would even think about driving drive at that level because they felt so woozy.

Had to move this guy off the busy bike trail today...

Quartering 12-mph headwind the last 45 miles northbound. Yuck. (It finally backed off to straight east.)

He's my favorite active rider. I wish he would have won that one Tour that eluded him on the last TT. Podagar is young and enthusiastic. Can't dislike him. Vinnie has his own story and is a worthy champion in every way. However, Roglic is classy and his mannerisms and interviews are those that I just like. Remco, Van Aert, van der Poel. What an amazing crew to have racing right now.

Quebec Criterium Race, September 13. 16 laps for over 200 kms.

That would be a fun race to watch. 18 laps, plus lots of other nonsense going on. I bet there are great vantage points with pubs nearby!

            Ergonomic Changes This Summer
Fine tuning of my riding position has resulted in changes in the following:
            1. Cycling shoe inserts.
            2. Saddle set back.
            3. Saddle tilt.
            4. Handlebar tilt.
            5. Cycling shoe cleat set back.
            6. Cycling shoe cleat angle / foot angle.
All of these changes were based on "feel" rather than published "formulas". In some cases the "formulas" were way off and resulted in physical issues. And in some cases the search for a better "feel" was initiated by cycling articles and/or videos.
It's easy to take the wrong fork in the road and end up way off from where you should be.

I'd like to have a professional bicycle fit someday, but the cost vs. anticipated positive changes never seems to be right. I ride two entirely different road bikes that are not setup very similarly, I'm sorry to say that I don't notice much difference going from one to the other. Probably the sign of a poor rider.

We're headed to Mackinac Island Michigan.

Travelin' in style. You told us about the Amana, Iowa place. I looks nice. Are you guys quiet guests, or do you stir up the whole place like you do when your with us? The Amana folks may not tolerate your shenanigans like we do!

Bears, I'm taking three days of in a row. First time in a long time. I have been tired lately and I am pretty sure over-training is at least part of the reason. I don't put up real big numbers, but I do something pretty physical almost every day. I'm just riding motorcycles this weekend!

I'm doing mainly Zone 2 these days. Some HIIT and hill climbs each week but mainly Zone 2.

Tyson, here's a project for you on the next lot.

Well, the motor looks OK. Maybe some of the paint and chrome will buff out. I'm concerned however, about the rear wheel and final drive.

Three levels of brain chemical release with increasing exertion zones.

            1. Dopamine with zone 2.

            3. Endorphins with zones 3 and 4.

            4. Growth hormone with zone 5.

            Feeling better and getting stronger.
