The K1300S filters seemed to collect more bugs and sand than other bikes we have owned.
Smart guy to put the fasteners back in where you removed.

The K1300S has true ram air. I'll be surprised if we don't have a Utah grasshopper in ours when I change the filters this winter.

got my 18,000 mile service today. The dealer added a warranty item - SIB 33 02 22 swing arm vent and driveshaft. It seems that people were not maintaining the fluids after going through deep water. Anyway, my bike is a 2019 R1250 GS so you may want to see if the warranty applies to your bike.

It's an official recall but Bob's BMW has no idea when they'll have the parts in stock. Mine's been through countless water crossings so I'd be pretty surprised if it's not rusted. As long as it keeps on keeping on until they do the recall I'm happy.

@27,000 miles my shaft was badly rusted, BMW replaced it under warranty. Since then I drop the FD & lube the splines every other tire change, looked good last time.

      Oil change today.

I didn't realize how big a Mit e vac I was getting when I ordered it. The little black mark is all the oil from a K. Maybe I'll go into diesel mechanics.

You can get 4 more changes before you have to empty that thing

So now to what I really needed to do, clean out my radiator. When I went with Rob to Ohio my bike was running good and warm, close to good and hot. Figured I was due for a coolant change and had been reading online about the radiator clogging as a common reason for overheating. Here's what the radiator and fan look like out.

Setting it up to wash it out. Could hardly see light through it. Covered the fan motor just in case hose work went awry.

Did a couple of sprays from back to front , then put some crud cutter on it and scrubbed with a plastic brush and sprayed again. Looks better and water passes through so air should.

Damn, Wes! How many miles? Jargon rode regularly in New Jersey, and that's not like Oklahoma or Texas. I can't imagine NJ being much different than Virginia, as to dust and crud in the radiator.

I've got 47,563 on it so there's that. A couple of other possible explanations, my subdivision lane is a half mile of dirt and gravel, plus I ride a bit faster than John, when shit hits it probably goes in deeper. Then there are those times I've followed Bill Morgan, subject to most anything there. That's all I've got. We'll see when it goes back together. Hopefully do the plugs while I've got the radiator out.

Tyson, none of our K1200S or K1300S bikes (or any K bikes since 1985) have ever needed anything more than a low pressure garden hose spray. The bugs that get in will get cooked and turn to powder. In Wes' case I suspect more dirt than bugs, which he already alluded to.

Or you could go ride in Utah. The grasshoppers up there are too big to go into the radiator.

Oil change yesterday, but I'm not as fancy as Wes. My oil spills out with the magic of gravity.

I pump the reservoir because I don't want to stress the drain tube. Plus I agree, it looks like it would take a week to drain.

I had a mity vac several years ago. It worked great once and then it just didn't. i used it on a car back then When I had the K1200S. it really took no time to drain the oil through the tube.

I always warm up the engine before pulling the drain plug and
filter so all the crud will flow out. I let it drain for a very long time.

Was going to do my plugs but had the wrong ones. Takes a week to get the right ones.

So got the right plugs yesterday. On my second plug the socket kept coming off the extension after I'd put the new plug in. My solution, super glue the socket and extension together. Then I couldn't get both of them out. Took the plug back out and realized that the socket wasn't stuck on the plug, but that the tolerance between the 16 mm socket and the slot where the coil went was just really tight. Sprayed some silicone lube on the outside of the socket and was able to get everything out after installing the plug. With the coil over plug that plug is a long way down and you need a magnet to get the old plug out. Did 2 today, will finish up tomorrow.

Thanks Mike. there's always just one more tool you need isn't it?

Plugs in and putting the bike back together. Look at that shiny radiator! Coolant fill tomorrow.

I liked using the MityVac when we had the K1300S. Like Tim mentioned, I worried about the drain tube breaking after repeated oil changes.
I had the one that connected to a air compressor.

Looks like a surgeon about to operate.

I broke off a torx bit in the rear wheel stud yesterday. Does that count as "so what did you do to your bike today?". The broken part is jammed in and it's to hard to drill. I had to give up. Bike is at the dealer now. Should be back by Thursday.

Craftsman Torx bit, but many years old. Still looked good, but obviously it wasn't. Dealer says they can get the axle bolt out. I hope so.

Snapping that bit would be immediately followed by a lot of ***** swearing, or cussin' even

And then sitting on the concrete, wiping away tears with a shop rag

Cleaned my air filter on the GS yesterday. The bolts for the ring of the SWMotech tank bag were total rust and corrosion. I'm surprised that the stainless steel bolts rusted so badly. I'll buy new bolts. Air filter was good. Two bugs and part of a leaf around the filter.

Put fresh coolant in today and tested. All OK, bike runs a lot cooler now since the radiator cleaning and fresh coolant.

12000 mile service. It was grueling. I had to drive to Pensacola, eat fish tacos and take a nap in the lounge. Then I had to drive home.
